98% on Rotten Tomatoes, 7.9 on IMDB, it took the Audience Award at Sundance Festival, so much hype made me salivate about it, I listened the soundtrack and I fell in love, I read all the posts on every indie music blog, I read the story behind the movie, I listened the NPR session and the Morning Becomes Eclectic episode…. Finally I watched it and I’m still asking myself what’s all the hype around this movie????I must confess I thought this movie would be the 2007’s Little Miss Sunshine, but it’s NOT (at least for me), nonetheless I DO liked it and I had that “refreshing” feeling when it ended.This irish indie movie is sold as a romance urban musical, and that’s the problem. It’s NOT a love story (in fact it begins with a plot but it’s the last thing you’ll remember in this film), second; it’s NOT a musical as we know them, even though the songs are the main dialogues in the movie. At the end of the day “Once” is the behind the scenes of the album.

In fact, it doesn’t make sense to talk about Once (the movie) without mentioning the album. The OST was made by Glen Hansard (The Frames) and Marketa Irglova (both of them are the actors of the film) and every track goes through the indie-folk music style that it’s comparable to Damien Rice, Travis and also Coldplay. The album is excellent and so “cute”, but what you get on the big screen is a long video music of the record.

Once, as a cinema “phenomenon” is “nice” and I hope to see it in the awards season (in the song category) but I rather recommend the OST first, then If you like it go to see the picture, but don’t expect a real film because: Once, as a movie is an excellent soundtrack.

[youtube]XzQRuTwaFI8[/youtube]98% en Rotten Tomatoes, 7.9 en IMDB, se llevó el premio del público en el Sundance Festival, tanto hype alrededor me tenía con mucha expectativa, escuché el Soundtrack quedé maravillado, leí la historia del como lograron armar la película, leí los miles de posts en blogs de música indie, escuché las sesiones del NPR y del Morning Becomes Eclectic….. a la final la vi la semana pasada y todavía me pregunto qué es lo que tiene la película que ha recibido tantos elogios??.De verdad pensé que esta sería la Little Miss Sunshine del 2007 y no lo es (al menos no para mi, habrá que esperar la temporada de premios), más esto no quiere decir que no me haya cautivado el proyecto, ni que haya salido con cierto feeling de frescura cuando terminó, ni que la considere (a mi pesar) bonita de una manera muy enfermiza (ya pasó una semana y sigo pegado con el tema)Esta película independiente irlandesa es vendida como una historia de amor imposible bajo el estilo de “musical-documental”. Y aquí es donde debo hacer correcciones. NO es una historia romántica (si bien empieza con una “trama”, ésta pasa a un segundo plano) y NO es un musical tal como lo conocemos, aunque en la mayoría (casi todas) de las escenas los diálogos se ven reemplazados por las canciones. La mejor manera de venderla es diciendo que es la prueba en video del cómo se hizo el disco.

Es que hablar de Once (la película) sin mencionar el álbum no tiene sentido alguno. Fue realizado por Glen Hansard líder de la banda The Frames con la ayuda de Marketa Irglova (quien por cosas del destino son los que actúan en la película, imprimiéndole la naturalidad y realismo a los personajes), y cada track se pasea por un indie-folk comparable fácilmente con el estilo de Damien Rice, Travis y hasta Coldplay. El disco en realidad no tiene desperdicio alguno y lo recomiendo porsi se quieren aventurar a Once, y si les llega a gustar pues vean la película aunque no esperen ver una trama de amor corta venas imposible, lo que tendrán en sus pantallas es un largo video musical de las canciones del disco.

Once, como mal llamado “fenómeno cinematográfico” del año me agrada y si llegase ser considerada en la temporada de premios sería una grata sorpresa, pero mientras tanto, en vez de recomendar que la vean les diré que busquen el álbum y le den una oportunidad.
