Interview: Panda Bear and Deacon - Animal Collective

English Version:Animal Collective’s Panda Bear and Deacon had the kindness to answer a few questions for Deaf Indie Elephants ahead of their new album Strawberry Jam
Answers to 1-4 from Noah aka Panda Bear.
1. Change of record label to Domino. How’s the influence of that in the way you’re making music?
A: It hasn’t so much although I should say I personally really wanted everyone at Domino to like the album and to feel good about working with us, but from the beginning they’ve seemed enthusiastic about what we do in the way that we do it. I mean to say that they’ve never seemed liked they wanted us to change around anything or to do anything different or to tell us how to do anything and I don’t think any of us really would like that so that’s good.
2.- Listening these new songs it seems that you are being more accessible. There’s more pop and your lyrics are more intelligible. Do you think hard-die fans will understand those changes? This is a new trend on your music or just a phase?
A: It’s curious that you would say that. I think we all feel this album is quite a bit less palatable than the last two and way more aggressive and intense but perhaps we’re having trouble being objective about it (we worked really hard and long on it for sure). I think Dave and I (who do most of the singing) have gotten more comfortable with our voices and with singing just because we’ve done it a lot and maybe that’s the same for the words. Perhaps because we’re more confident on our ends we’re more willing to let people really understand what’s going on.
In lots of ways I feel like the pop side of the music has always been there. I suppose we’re just more excited about letting that side of us come out to the front these days. I kind of see all of our albums as phases so I think it’s safe to say that Strawberry Jam is a phase as well.
I don’t know if really big fans will like the album, well I’m sure some of them certainly won’t like it and I hope some of them do but that’s sort of been the case for every new album of ours and I’d say it’s our fault for changing around so much. It seems like for every album we do we lose some people and gain others and I think that’s good.
3.- What can you tell us about the influence of Scott Colburn in SJ?
A: Scott certainly played a big part in the sound of Strawberry Jam and for Feels too (the last album we did, he worked on that one as well) but I think his influence might be hard to trace sometimes. I guess that just being around him and hearing him talk about certain things and hearing his perspective about everything fed into the kinds of sounds we made if you know what I mean.
We were reluctant to work with the same person on more than one record mostly because we’d never done that before. Our concession ultimately was that we’d take Scott out of his environment (his home studio in Seattle where we recorded Feels) and ask him to use different recording techniques and approaches than he was used to and that was exciting for all of us I think and it worked out pretty good.
4.- What about that song about Al Green?
A: The title of that song (For Reverend Green) is actually a reference to our tour manager and very good friend Brad. He’s the best; he’s been very good for us over the last couple of years and as a part of the group he has brought more fun and good. So that jam is for him for sure.
Answers to 5-7 from Josh Dibb aka Deacon.
5.- What albums/bands are you listening this time that you recommend?
A: Eric Copeland (member: Black Dice and Terrestrial Tones) recently finished a noise/pop/dancehall album and has been playing the occasional mind numbing show, pretty awesome.
We know a lot of great people making really incredible and personal jams. Black Dice, Gang Gang Dance, Tickley Feather, Excepter, Kria Brekkan, First Nation. I think that we have all been playing the Burial record a decent amount.
Some really great African music is becoming more available (labels like Sterns Africa and Dakar Sound). Hallelujah Chicken Run Band (an African band from the seventies) has some really amazingly catchy and fun jams. J Dilla in his many forms has been blowing some minds. I have been listening to the Ruff Draft album at least once a day for a while now. I am revisiting Jaylib’s Champion Sound (collaboration between J Dilla and Madlib), and of course J Dilla’s Donuts. Pantha du Prince just been put out a sweet record…. I could go on for a while….
6.- Paris Hilton in jail. How does it affect you? 
A: I don’t know if my thoughts mirror those of the other dudes (AT, PB and GEO), but this aspect of our media and culture really upset me. There are so many more important things happening right now around the world and in our own country (most substantially the political battle being waged between the left and the right) and yet it seems to be completely reasonable for all the major new organizations to give up to the second reports on the status of Paris and her current emotional and spiritual state. It makes me sad that this is news.
7.- What’s on the horizon for you?
A: We are once again breaking away from where we were and trying to go somewhere new. While Deacon spends some time soul searching and finding his own tune, Avey, Geo and Panda are continuing on with new sounds and ideas. The three active members have already written an entire set of new material that will surely be the material for the follow up to Strawberry Jam.
Picking up the pace. Lots of touring planned for this year. Europe in July. U.S. in September, more Europe and elsewhere in November. We’re all stoked to be doing what we do. It’s going to be a busy year. Lots of touring, a new album; some videos, and a longer format DVD collaboration that should be ready to go by the spring between us and Danny Perez (video/film artist responsible for years of Black Dice stage visuals, and music videos for us, Black Dice and Blood On the Wall).

1. Cambiaron de sello disquero para Domino. ¿Cómo ha influido este hecho en la forma como hacen música?
R: En realidad no ha sido mucha, Personalmente quería que el álbum fuese aceptado por todos en Domino y que se sintieran a gusto trabajando con nosotros. Pero, desde el inicio ellos han sido entusiastas en lo que hacemos y la forma en que lo hacemos. Es decir, ellos no han querido que cambiemos ni tampoco nos dicen que hagamos algo totalmente distinto en cómo hacer las cosas y no creo que ninguno de las dos partes quiera llegar a ese punto, lo cual es bueno.
2.- Al escuchar las nuevas canciones parece ser que ahora son más accesibles en cierta forma. Hay como más pop y sus letras son inteligibles. ¿Piensan que los fanáticos extremos entiendan estos cambios? ¿Es una nueva tendencia en cómo van hacer música o sólo es una fase?
R: Es curioso que digas eso. Pienso que todos sentimos este álbum es menos “aceptable” que los 2 anteriores y en cierto modo es más agresivo e intenso. Quizás tenemos problemas en ser objetivos al respecto (hemos trabajado mucho en este álbum). Dave y yo (quienes hacemos el canto) hemos estado más cómodos con nuestras voces por el hecho que lo hemos estado haciendo por mucho tiempo y posiblemente eso suceda con las letras. Posiblemente porque estamos más seguros en como finalizamos una canción, estamos dispuestos en dejar entender a las personas que es lo que está pasando.
En muchos sentidos siento que el lado pop de nuestra música siempre ha estado ahí. Supongo que estamos más entusiasmados en dejar que sobresalga ese aspecto en estos días. En general veo todos nuestros álbumes como fases por lo que Strawberry Jam es una de ellas.
No se si a los verdaderos fans les agrade el álbum. Estoy seguro que para algunos no y espero que a otros si, pero ese es el caso cuando se saca un disco nuevo y creo que es nuestra culpa por cambiar constantemente.
Pareciera que en cada álbum ganamos y perdemos fans… pienso que está bien.
3.- ¿Qué pueden decirnos sobre la influencia de Scott Colburn en SJ?
R: Scott participó en buena parte en el sonido de Strawberry Jam y Feels, pero creo que su influencia puede ser difícil de seguir algunas veces. Capaz el estar a su alrededor, hablar con él y escuchar su perspectiva sobre las cosas nos introdujo en los sonidos que hemos realizado.
Nosotros fuimos reacios en trabajar con la misma persona en más de un disco porque en realidad no lo habíamos hecho antes. Nuestra posición fue llevar Scott fuera de su ambiente (su casa estudio en Seattle donde grabamos Feels) y decirle que usara distintas técnicas de grabación y enfoques que las que usó antes, creo que fue lo mejor para todos y funcionó.
4.- ¿Qué pueden decir sobre esa canción sobre Al Green?
R: El título de esa canción (For Reverend Green) es una referencia a nuestro tour manager y buen amigo Brad. Es el mejor, ha sido muy bueno con nosotros en los últimos años y al ser parte del grupo ha traído mucha alegría y diversión. Por lo que esta canción es por él.

5.- ¿Qué álbumes han escuchado últimamente que puedan recomendar?
R: Eric Copeland (integrante de: Black Dice y Terrestrial Tones) terminó recientemenre un disco de noise/pop/dancehall y ha estado tocando varios shows, impresionante.
Conocemos mucha gente que están haciendo increíbles trabajos: Black Dice, Gang Gang Dance, Tickley Feather, Excepter, Kria Brekkan, First Nation, también creo que hemos colocado el disco de Burial una gran cantidad de veces.
También buena música de África está siendo disponible (sellos como Sterns Africa y Dakar Sound). Hallelujah Chicken Run Band (una banda Africana de los setentas) tiene interesantes y entretenidos trabajos.
He estado escuchando el álbum de Ruff Draft por lo menos una vez al día, y he estado chequeando Champion Sound de Jaylib (colaboración entre J Dilla y Madlib), y por supuesto el Donuts de J Dilla y Pantha du Prince… podría continuar sin parar.
6.- Paris Hilton estuvo en prisión. ¿Cómo los afectó?
R: No se si mis creencias sean las mismas a los del grupo (AT, PB y GEO), pero este aspecto de nuestra cultura y medios me enfada. Muchas cosas importantes pasan en nuestro país en este momento y en el mundo entero y pareciera ser que es razonable que todo se deje en segundo plano para referirse al estatus de Paris Hilton y su estado espiritual y emocional. Me entristece que esto ahora sea noticia.
7.- ¿Qué hay en el horizonte para la banda?
R: Estamos partiendo de donde estamos para intentar ir a otro lugar. Mientras yo paso tiempo buscando mi alma y encontrando su melodía. Avey, Geo y Panda andan con nuevos sonidos e ideas.
Los tres integrantes activos ya han escrito un set completo de material nuevo que seguramente formará parte del disco próximo a Strawberry Jam.
A la vista tenemos planeado el tour para este año, Europa en Julio, USA en Septiembre, más Europa y otros lugares en Noviembre. Estamos emocionados en lo que estamos haciendo. Será un año muy ocupado, el tour, un nuevo álbum, algunos videos y un DVD que debería estar listo para la primavera en colaboración con Danny Pérez (artista responsable de trabajos y videos musicales de nosotros, Black Dice y Blood On the Wall).
