Deaf Indie Elephants

Cambodian psychedelic pop from the 70s or maybe from some Bollywood megaproduction.

The first time I listened them was on Weeds (fooled by the amazing riff of One Thousand Tears Of A Tarantula) and even though this band is so particular: guys from L.A, cambodian singer and lyrics in Khmer, I didn’t pay attention to their music.

Despite of that, Venus on Earth (third album), released last month was a slap on the face. In fact their music is more common beyond what anyone might expect (you can define it “easy-listening” music with surf rock influences…. but cambodian). The album is very pleasant, giving you the chance to invest time on this style, although let’s be honest, their bizarre (and effective) background is the driver that impulses you to get into this proposal.

Primero los conocí gracias a Weeds (engañado por el fabuloso riff de One Thousand Tears Of A Tarantula) y a pesar de lo particular de la banda: chicos de L.A, cantante de Cambodia y canciones en Khmer, no le presté mucha atención.

Sin embargo, Venus on Earth (tercer álbum), lanzado el mes pasado fue una bofetada. En realidad su música es más común de lo que uno puede esperar (pudiéndose definir en un easy listening, con alguna que otra influencia surf rock…. pero camboyano). Disco bien bien agradable (a pesar de bajar el ritmo al final) que da cabida a querer descubrir más de este estilo aunque estamos claros que el background de la banda mercadea y hace que sea el principal motivo al adentrarse a esta propuesta.

Senderos de Gloria como la llamaron en estas tierras, protagonizada por Jean Reno y James Franco y bajo la dirección de Tony Bill, está ambientada en 1916 y trata de un grupo de jóvenes que se aventuran, ya sea por convicción, deseo u obligación a la Escuadrilla Lafayette a luchar en contra de los Alemanes durante la Primera Guerra Mundial.

El guión, a pesar que está inspirada en hechos reales, a mi parecer es bien flojo en vista que la trama se desarrolla sin llegar a profundizar la vida de los personajes más allá de las circunstancias durante las escenas, no obstante, visualmente está muy bien hecha y las partes de acción conformadas por las batallas aéreas con esos aviones al mejor estilo del Barón Rojo son el gancho de la película y las que realmente la salvan manteniendo la tensión y entretenimiento durante el film.

Películas de este estilo tienden a mostrar los horrores de la guerra y los “demonios internos” de los protagonistas, sin embargo, Senderos de Gloria aboga por mostrar una cara más relajada del tema, abarcando un poco de romance, acción, comedia, pero sin llegar a profundizar.

Es por ello que, salvando las diferencias, esta película es del estilo de Pearl Harbor pero versión Primera Guerra Mundial. Es decir, superproducción, grandes escenarios, acción justificada y un score acorde al momento, pero no es maravillosa, no obstante, es de las que se puede ver totalmente.

This is one of the albums I have been waiting with excitement along with Neon Bible. Last year Zach Condon became the favorite of the blogosphere with his project Beirut because of the refreshing combination of youth, novelty and Balkan Music.
The Flying Club Cup is its comeback, this time with the help of friends like Owen Pallett and A Hawk and a Hacksaw’s Heather Trost. Inspired by Jacques Brel and french chanson and produced by Griffin Rodríguez (Man Man and A Hawk and a Hacksaw) from the first notes of A Sunday Smile, we realized this is the work of a complete band, Beirut stopped being the Zach’s solo project to become a big band.

Though the surprise factor on Beirut has passed, The Flying Club Cup doesn’t take risks compared to its predecessor, however it seems to me this album is less “handmade” BUT without moving away from its style.

This is not a bad sign, it’s just that the melancholy of Gulag is gone, and Zach welcomes some kind of optimism and cordiality inviting you to chorus this album.

In fact, you can sense the influence of France in this work and I think the best way to describe it is like the performance of Beirut with The Kocani Orkestar, camaraderie, and everybody singing along with the music, La blogotheque has been a witness.

Beirut fans will be grateful with this album, finally let rest GULAG cd. From this moment The Flying Club Cup is on my top 2007.

Highlights: A Sunday Smile, Le Banlieu, Cliquot, The Penalty, Forks and knives.

Este es uno de los discos que he estado esperando con ansias además del Neon Bible. El año pasado Zach Condon se convirtió en el consentido unánime de la blogósfera con su proyecto Beirut al traer de una manera muy fresca y actual los sonidos de la Antigua Europa Oriental.

The Flying Club Cup es su regreso, esta vez con ayuda de grandes amigos como Owen Pallett y Heather Trost de A Hawk and a Hacksaw. Insipirado en Jacques Brel y la chanson francesa, este álbum fue producido por Griffin Rodriduez (Man Man y A Hawk and a Hacksaw) y desde las primeras notas de A Sunday Smile, nos damos cuenta que es el trabajo de una banda puesto que Beirut ha dejado de ser el proyecto individual de Zach, para convertirse en el líder.

A pesar que ya el “factor sorpresa y novedoso” respecto a Beirut ha pasado, The Flying Club Cup no toma riesgos respecto a su antecesor, sin embargo me parece menos artesanal pero sin apartarse de su particular estilo. Esto no es una característica mala, solo que el sentimiento depresivo del Gulag no se ve reflejada en esta nueva producción, todo lo contrario, hay optimismo y cordialidad que te invita a corear, eso si, sin olvidar algunos rastros nostálgicos que desde la carátula del disco ya es apreciado.

Se percibe el hecho de haber sido grabado en Francia y creo que la mejor manera de catalogar este álbum fue como en su presentación junto a The Kocani Orkestar, camaradería, y todos entregados a la música y quizás con una botella de vino a la mano, La blogotheque ha sido testigo.

Fans de Beirut se sentirán agradecidos de dejar descansar el Gulag para concentrarse en The Flying Clup Cup que desde YA entra en mi top 2007.

With a Mercury Prize 2007 nomination and a peculiar video in high rotation, Bat For Lashes won my attention. It’s not a group, in fact is the musical alter ego of British Pakistani Natasha Khan, whose visual style emphasizes the culture and religion of the old continent.

Musically, the basis of Fur & Gold are on the same road of artists like Björk, Tori Amos and Kate Bush. Nonetheless, the essence of her style reminds me of Tori Amos’ Little Earthquakes (precisely in tracks like Trophy and What’s A Girl to Do?).

With all the dark and bizarre atmospheres Bat For Lashes is my new obsession nowadays, and her video What’s a Girl To Do? is simple but just terrific, I really like the Donnie Darko / haunting style, just like the nature of the song.

Con su nominación al Mercury Prize 2007 y un video en rotación muy peculiar, Bat For Lashes se ganó mi atención. No es un grupo, sino el alterego musical de Natasha Khan, inglesa de ascendencia pakistaní cuyo estilo visual evidencia esa mezcla cultural / religiosa del viejo continente.

Musicalmente hablando, Fur & Gold, su trabajo debut, se establece sobre el camino que artistas como Björk y Tori Amos han trazado. Aunque han nombrado que recuerda a Cat Power y Kate Bush esto me parece más a nivel vocal. Sin embargo, la esencia de su estilo me recuerda demasiado al Little Earthquakes de Tori Amos (precisamente en tracks como Trophy y What’s A Girl to Do?

Con atmósferas muy oscuras y místicas Bat For Lashes la tengo en constante rotación en estos días y su video de What’s a Girl To Do? es simple pero sencillamente genial por el estilo Donnie Darko / tenebroso que impone capturando la naturaleza de la canción.

Mi apego por las películas de terror oficialmente cesó aquella tarde Caraqueña cuando me negaron la entrada a Freddy Krueger 6, porque “no era apta para niños”, me tuve que conformar años después con verla en TV grabada en Betamax (la tecnología no había llegado a mi hogar en ese momento) y haciendo unos improvisados lentes 3D para que a la final no diera resultado el esfuerzo

Tiendo a no ver este tipo de género a menos que la película sea comercialmente explotada a niveles que se vuelva icono de cultura pop (Scary Movie, The Eye, Saw, por sólo nombrar algunas), lo mío es más el drama, suspenso, musicales, acción, algo de buen cine independiente, frikadas and all that jazz.

Cuando Cines Unidos’ RoRRo hizo la invitación para ver The Messengers, le di una oportunidad al género, más que todo por ser la primera película americana de los hermanos Pang (creadores de The Eye “Gin gwai”, que por cierto está pautado su remake para el 2008 con Jessica Alba). En ella actúan Dylan McDermott (The Practice), Penelope Ann Miller (Carlito’s Way), John Corbett (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) y Kristen Stewart (Panic Room), no hay que negarlo, no es el común cast de actores desconocidos y los directores prometen en su género.

En fin, bien que había olvidado lo que significaba ver una película de terror siglo XXI: metralleta de clichés, chico bueno es malo, viceversa y todo lo contrario, expresiones sobreactuadas, trancazos con efecto de sonido y muchas “fintas” para lograr asustar a la audiencia (para finalmente soltar una carcajada).

No hay que negarlo, es una fórmula que funciona y seguirá funcionando y por lo menos a mi me toma desprevenido en ciertos momentos (en realidad, más de los que quisiera).

Para concluir, más allá de ser considerado un clásico, The Messengers cumple modestamente su misión, entretener y asustar “sanamente” (no gore), no es una película que canse a pesar de lo que ofrece la trama, pero no esperes más de lo que estas líneas o el trailer te puedan ofrecer, The Messengers es tan o igual de efectiva, en ciertos momentos, como el bien ponderado y “favorito de la familia Venezolana” Maze Scare.

Finally I watched the second film of Daft Punk titled Electroma. I read all kind of reviews before watch it and I was a little bit predisposed to it. In the end, I must say this project is not for everybody, but it’ll enter in the category of cult-“movie”.Without spoiling, Electroma, written and directed by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo (Daft Punk) is the 75 minutes odyssey of two robots to become humans, or as I want to call it “robots get depressed too”

Forget about Interstella 5555, this is not an animated film and it’s not a musical, in fact all the songs played on this SILENT movie aren’t from Daft Punk, but are perfect in the plot of the movie… ahh btw, the Daft Punk guys don’t act in this film.

For that reason, Electroma represents a film very experimental, probably a whim or a risky project of the band (it’s a shame they don’t took benefit from “Human After All”, that album is the perfect complement for the movie)Anyway, this film made justice to that proverb “A picture is worth a thousand words”, Electroma’s strengths are the frames, the landscapes and the visual atmospheres created (for example: I’ll never forget the “clockwork orange-esque” white room scene, those images are stuck in my mind)

I watched Electroma at night and I didn’t fall asleep, in fact I wanted to know the end of the story and I really like it, (and sometimes I cry) so I believe this movie was well done, but I won’t watch it everytime, it’s not for everybody. The only thing I hated was the timing; 75 minutes is enough for this kind of movie, but watching two robots with existentialist problems walking on a desert with the music of Chopin is really priceless.
Recommended for: brave film lovers, snobs, experimental guys and for every fan of the band (watch out: fan of the band, not its music)

The Good:
- It’s Daft Punk
- Unforgettable scenes
- The music and its relation with the story.
- The final scene :_(

The Bad:
- 75 minutes for this kind of project is enough. Easily it could have been a short movie.
- Sometimes is boring.
- Not for everybody.

Finalmente logré ver el tan comentado y esperado proyecto de Daft Punk llamado Electroma. Si bien ya había leído varias reseñas al respecto estaba un poco predispuesto ante la película. A la final puedo decir que a pesar que no es para todo público, entrará en esa categoría de “culto cinematográfico”.

Sin tratar de revelar más allá de lo que se puede intuir en los trailers y el plot.Electroma, escrito y dirigido por Thomas Bangalter y Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo (Daft Punk) es la odisea en 75 minutos, de 2 robots en querer ser humanos, o como yo lo llamo “los robots también se deprimen”Olvídense de Interstella 5555, esto no es animado, ni es un musical, de hecho las canciones de fondo (porque la película es MUDA) no son de Daft Punk pero están bien logradas dándole sentido a las situaciones que se presentan y a diferencia de lo que pensaba en un principio: Daft Punk tampoco actúan.

Por tales razones Electroma representa un film muy experimental, hasta podría decirse que es un capricho y movimiento arriesgado del grupo musical (lástima que no le sacaron todo el provecho junto con “Human After All” porque hubiese sido el complemente efectivo para el proyecto).El film le hace justicia a lo de “una imagen vale más que mil palabras”. Es por ello que su fuerte son las tomas, los paisajes, las atmósferas visuales creadas (por ejemplo: la escena del “laboratorio” todo blanco con cierto guiño al Milk Bar de la Naranja Mecánica es una imagen que JAMAS se me olvidará, al igual que la última escena.).

Electroma la vi en la noche y no me quedé dormido, de hecho quería saber como terminaba la trama, y me gustó mucho y luego de varios días de haberla visto, todavía “me da cosita” la historia y por ello pienso está bien lograda, el mensaje llegó.
Tampoco es para verla a cada rato, ni es para todo público y lo único que le reclamo realmente es que pudieron hacerla más corta y hubiese quedado mejor, aunque ver a dos robots con problemas existenciales caminando en un desierto teniendo como fondo musical a Chopin no tiene precio.

Recomendado para cinéfilos valientes, snobistas, presumidos, experimentales y para los fans de la banda. (ojo: de la banda, no de su música).

Pros:
- Es Daft Punk
- Escenas inolvidables.
- La música y su interrelación con la trama.
- La escena final :_(

Contras:
- Fácilmente pudo haber sido un cortometraje y hubiese quedado mejor.
- Aburrida en momentos.
- No es para todo público.

The best thing yesterday was Kevin Drew’s album “Spirit If”, the first of the series “Broken Social Scene Presents”I almost feel bad for the “leak”, but c’mon, we are talking about BSS, I couldn’t wait ‘til the release of this work.

On first listen, Kevin Drew’s “solo album” is just another BSS production, but without the pomposity of the collective. With a first track which reminds me of You Forgot It In People this adventures begins. It’s true that is more extensive than I was expecting, and also in the second half you can “feel” the strength of the album. Nonetheless, it left me with the sensation that these songs easily were tracks that couldn’t reach the final work of prior BSS productions.

For that reason you’ll find in this album:

- Acoustics atmospheres (BSS trademark).
- Drumming and guitar distortions
- A song which its beginning IS “I Feel It All” from Feist (Safety Bricks)
- Another one the can be the follow-up of Capturing The Flag (Bodhi Sappy Weekend).
- …and Collaborations from “the guys of the band” (When It Begins)
- BTW, this album reminds me of YFIP (but that is me)

I confess, If it wasn’t a BSS record, I wouldn’t check it. Of course it’s a good work, but you can notice my lack of objectivity regarding BSS.
So, if you’re a fan of the band, celebrate and enjoy this project. First: Kevin, next Brendan.

Viva Broken Social Scene: D

Nada mejor para mi actual fiebre con Broken Social Scene que escuchar el álbum de Kevin Drew “Spirit If”, el primero de la serie “Broken Social Scene Presents…”

Casi me siento mal por haber escrito “leak”, pero viniendo de esta banda no pude aguantar hasta su lanzamiento oficial.

Lo primero del “disco solista” de Kevin es que este no es más que una nueva producción de BSS, sólo que esta vez canalizada por un integrante (que en este caso viene siendo uno de los líderes del colectivo). Con un primer track que recuerda al You Forgot it in People comienza esta aventura. Es verdad, es más extenso de lo que esperaba y en la segunda mitad se ven las fortalezas que tiene el disco, sin embargo me deja un sentimiento que fácilmente estas canciones podrían haber sido (y creo no equivocarme) tracks que no lograron entrar en producciones anteriores de la banda.

Es por ello que como un disco más de BSS (pero sin el punch o pomposidad de los mismos) tendremos:

- Atmósferas acústicas (trademark de la banda).
- Drummings y distorsiones de guitarra.
- Una canción cuyo comienzo ES “I Feel It All” de Feist (Safety Bricks)
- Otra canción que podría ser la continuación de Capturing The Flag (Bodhi Sappy Weekend).
- Y colaboraciones de los “chicos de la banda”
- Por cierto, me recordó demasiado al YFIIP (pero ese soy yo)

Confieso que si no es porque se trata de BSS no hubiese prestado mucha atención al álbum, por supuesto que es bueno, aunque acepto que carezco de objetividad a lo que BSS se refiere, y supongo que todo fan de la banda debe sentir regocijo ante este proyecto… luego de Kevin vendrá Brendan: En fin…..Larga vida a Broken Social Scene.

I’ve just checked Calexico’s new material titled “Toolbox”.
Burns and Convertino made an only-Instrumental album that will be available on tour and in their official store.

IMHO, this is an “only for fan” material and a gift for all the people who are waiting the next official album, but don’t get me wrong, there are good tracks such as The News About William, The Road Back, Above the Branch and my favorite Hair Like Spanish Moss… Tucson music for our pleasure.

At first moment “Hair Like Spanish Moss” sounds just like “He Lays in The Reins” which made my day :D, it’s the song that I highly recommend.

Enjoy it.

Acabo de revisar el nuevo material de Calexico titulado “Toolbox”
Burns y Convertino realizaron un CD totalmente instrumental el cual estará disponible en los conciertos y en la página oficial de la banda.

En mi opinion, en realidad este es un trabajo sólo para fans, sin embargo no quiero que me malinterpreten, hay muy buenas piezas tales como: The News About William, The Road Back, Above the Branch y mi favorita Hair Like Spanish Moss… más del sonido característico de Tucson para nuestro deleite.

En un primer instante “Hair Like Spanish Moss” suena igual a “He Lays in The Reins” el cual completó de hacer mi día :D, es por ello que esta canción es recomendada, pero como dije, sólo para fans, no esperen mucho de este trabajo, el potencial de Calexico no está reflejado en “Toolbox”.

Considering:

- I’m a hard-die SP fan
- SP will never make an album superior to Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie.
- Anything in the World is better than Machina I and Zwan.

First Impressions:

- Overproduced with a loooot of guitars, which I like.
- I liked the album’s structure, step-by-step is growing the intensity ‘til the song “United States”, and then the tempo is slowing.
- But, the last 2 songs I felt totally lost.
- Chamberlin really stands out by himself, also I don’t feel the absence of James and D’Arcy, and there’s nothing new about Corgan’s voice
- On a second listen, I had to force myself in order to appreciate the album, right now I’m on my fourth listen… and I’m convinced by it.
- United States is a phenomenal 9 minutes piece, it reminds me of XYU even though it seems that is overestimated.
- (Come On) Let’s Go = Zero v 2.0
- 7 Shades of Black = TEITBITE v 2.0
- Bleeding the Orchid: At first listen it passes under the table, now I KNOW it’s one of the best, it’s so dark.. oh that guitar riffs, that drum.
- That’s The Way: It’s the Zwan-esque song, I’m scared because I think this is the second single of the album.
- Highlights: 7 Shades of Black, Bleeding The Orchid, Tarantula, United States, Bring the Light, (Come On) Let’s Go.

Verdict:
Zeitgeist is a solid return, it’s highly decent, it’s not great but it’s better than EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD had expected from the band, Zeitgeist left me with a good concept of this new Smashing Pumpkins.

Viva the 90’s… now, let’s shop Zero’s t-shirt.

- Chamberlin realmente se luce, no se nota la ausencia de James Iha ni D’Arcy, y la voz de Corgan, nada que no hayamos escuchado anteriormente.
- En una segunda oída tuve que forzarme para apreciar el disco, ya estoy en la cuarta y me convenció.
- United States fenomenal pieza de 9 minutos, me recuerda a XYU aunque pareciera que desde ya esté sobreestimada.
- (Come On) Let’s Go = Zero versión 2.0
- 7 Shades of Black = TEITBITE v 2.0
- Bleeding the Orchid: A la primera pasó desapercibida, pero ahora es genial, oscura.
- That’s The Way..: es la más Zwan-esque, me asusta que puede que sea el segundo single del álbum.
- Highlights: 7 Shades of Black, Bleeding The Orchid, Tarantula, United States, Bring the Light, (Come On) Let’s Go.

Veredicto:
Zeitgeist es un sólido regreso, decente, no grandioso pero mejor de lo que TODO EL MUNDO esperaba de la banda, me dejó con un mejor concepto sobre estos nuevos SP.

Vivan los 90’s… a comprar t-shirt de Zero.

Fifth album of Okkervil River. Exceed a work as the acclaimed Black Sheep Boy is sincerely hard, these are my first impressions:

- If you are expecting the dark atmosphere of Black Sheep Boy, maybe you’ll be disappointed. The Stage Names is more optimistic and popish than prior works, but always with the country, lo-fi, indie folk trend.

- Unless It’s Kicks: OOOOHHH ooOo OOOOH OOOOH….

- A Hand To Take Hold Of The Scene: tuu ruu tuu tu tuuuuuu, clap clap

- A Girl In Port: Just excellent, probably the most BSB-esque song.

- Yeap, the voices are very Cornor Orbest…. and the music like The Decemberists.

- Highlights: Our Live is Not a Movie or Maybe, Unless It’s Kicks, A Hand To Take Hold Of The Scene, A Girl In Port, John Allyn Smith Sails

- The last 2 minutes of the album: Tribute to Beach Boys with a “cover” of Sloop John B in the song John Allyn Smith Sails.

- A very solid work, more upbeat and relaxed but not as emotive as BSB. The instrumentation is a plus, and the lyrics excellent as usual, sometimes you don’t know what to expect from a song.

- Without a doubt, this is a best of year material, almost made me forget all the releases of 2007.

Quinto álbum de los Texanos, Okkervil River, superar algo como el aclamado Black Sheep Boy es sinceramente difícil, he aquí primeras impresiones:

- Si esperas la atmósfera oscura de Black Sheep Boy, puede que te decepciones un poco, The Stage Names se caracteriza por ser más optimista, popish, y apartarse de lo que habían realizado últimamente, pero sin dejar de un lado lo country, lo-fi, indie folk.

- Los 2 últimos minutos del álbum, tributo a Beach Boys con un “cover” de “Sloop John B” en la canción John Allyn Smith Sails.

- Trabajo muy sólido, más “divertido” y relajado que BSB aunque no tan emotivo. La instrumentación es un plus, a veces no sabes con que te vas a encontrar en una sola canción.

- Indudablemente para mi esto es material para ser lo mejor del 2007, por poco me hizo olvidar anteriores lanzamientos.
