Modest Mouse – We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (2007)

English:

I have to confess, I discovered Modest Mouse thanks to “Float On”, this single was so special in that moment and the album was constantly in rotation in my ipod. Nonetheless, I could listen all the discography (except for the ep’s) and also I thought the band sell itself, just like the “diehard fans” felt. How could a band make songs like Tundra/Desert or Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset and be recognized for the “Good News…” album?, it’s not their fault to have a single such as “Float On” that everybody likes and in fact, it’s a pretty good one.

We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank has a duality; in this album the band tries to be accessible to a wider public without leaving its rustic sounds from its beginnings.
The first single “Dashboard” made a lot of fans to be worried with that catchy and Franz Ferdinand-esque style but finally we could notice that Isaac Brock maintains his identity with all his psycho screams and laughs incorporated in “March Into The Sea” and others tracks like Fly trapped In a Jar and the 8 minutes Spitting Venom.

Now that The Smith’s Johnny Marr is a member of the band, I don’t think he has made a strong influence in the sound of the album, because it keeps the same style of the last one, but more polished.

Stop worrying and enjoy the album in the moment is been conceived, if you say MM is in a downward spiral, please!!!, that is a thought that has been around since their last 3 albums, I have enjoyed this new sound and the old one, and is not a bad thing to incorporate some popish songs, I think this record is a good equilibrium.

Anyway, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank is not the best album of their career, it doesn’t have a Float On or a Trailer Trash not even a “Talking Shit about a pretty sunset” but this album has grown on me with every listen, and something that they made clear is that this work is the answer everybody expects of a band in its best moment, they have to decide to be accessible to a wider public without losing their identity, IMHO, they achieved that goal.

PS: For sure, We’ve got Everything will be the next single, no doubt about that.

Que ha pasado en este descanso…..

Música:

Chequeen de vez en cuando el podcast de AOL llamado The Interface¡, entrevistan a una banda y hacen un performance en vivo de generalmente 3 canciones, está Cat Power, Editors, Noel Gallagher, Eagles of Death Metal entre otros, he aquí las recientes que he escuchado:

Hold Steady en AOL’s The Interface
The Decemberists en AOL’s The Inteface

Lo Nuevo de Damon Albarn, The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, con la canción “History Song“ – Via: I Rock Cleveland.

Lo Nuevo de Bright Eyes, del álbum Casaadaga, la canción “Endless Entertainment “. – Via: Stereogum

Anyway, 40 minutes of electronic non stop music for your parties, curiously this album received great reviews last year… I don’t why I keep it in my computer…. Of course, guess all the songs.

Movies:

This is Movie Awards season, there’re several “torrent” screeners (for your consideration). Good quality, obviously isn’t compare to the movies. Anyway, I had the chance to watch: Little Children, Pan’s Laberynth and Rocky Balboa, on hold….. Bobby and Flag of Our Fathers.
