Last month I said that I didn’t like that much the new Cat Power’s album… well, I was wrong. With her performance in Jools Holland and with this amazing concert from the Black Sessions last January 23th, my unconditional love started again.

Enjoy this great performance.

El mes pasado dije que el nuevo álbum de Cat Power no me había gustado taaanto, bueno estaba muy equivocado.
Con la presentación que realizó en el programa de Jools Holland y con este gran concierto de la serie Black Sessions el pasado Enero 23, mi amor incondicional por ella ha empezado nuevamente.

January is gone. But musically speaking I enjoyed it a lot, thanks to these things:

- I’ve should have paid attention to Jens Lekman last year. Night Falls Over Kortedala is an excellent album that should have been on my Top 2007 but it wasn’t until now that listened it. Without a doubt, “A Postcard to Nina” is one of my favorites songs, so fresh, so humorous.

- Another artist I should have listened last year is the so-called “next best thing” from UK, Kate Nash.. Her vocal resemblance to Regina Spektor got me instantly, and songs like “Skeleton Song” it’s a masterpiece, it sounds like a Tori Amos’ one…. by the way, have you listened the covers she has made?

- Sia’s new album was love at first “sight” even though I think it’s very mainstream ( and sometimes I think Nelly Furtado is the one who’s singing). Her song Lentil became a favorite for this year.

- I idolize Cat Power but Jukebox is just “ok” (at least for me) but I must say I’m still excited for the Bob Dylan cover she made for I’m Not There’s OST….. ah!, and also for her version of Angelitos Negros

Y se fue Enero. Musicalmente hablando así lo disfruté:

- Debí prestarle atención a Jens Lekman el año pasado. Night Falls Over Kortedala es un álbum que debió estar en mi Top 2007 pero fue ahora que tuve la oportunidad de escucharlo con calma. Sin duda alguna “A Postcard to Nina” es una gran canción, tanto por lo fresca como por la narrativa y lo curioso de la situación.

- Otra artista que debí haber escuchado el año pasado es a la “next best thing” de UK, Kate Nash. Su parecido vocal con Regina Spektor me enganchó a la primera, y canciones como Skeleton Song cuyo intermedio no tiene nada que envidiarle a una veterana como Tori Amos…. por cierto ya fueron a ver los covers que les dejé?

- Lo nuevo de Sia también fue amor a primera vista, si bien pienso que es material mainstream (y a veces siento que canta es Nelly Furtado :P), a la final es lo que uno menos le interesa. Su canción Lentil entra así a formar parte de las favoritas del año inmediatamente.

- Yo idolatro a Cat Power pero el Jukebox me dejó cierto sin sabor. Sólo por el hecho de emocionarme por el cover de Bob Dylan disponible en el OST de “I’m not there” la perdono, ah! y también por dar un espaldarazo a la canción “Angelitos Negros”.

As a Venezuelan I felt compromised to post about this. From new Cat Power’s covers album “Jukebox” you can listen her own version of “Angelitos Negros”. (Black Angels)

Angelitos Negros is a beautiful poem of one of the greatest icons of Venezuela, the poet/politician Andrés Eloy Blanco that can be considered as a hymn against racial discrimination.
As a song, Angelitos Negros was popularized by several Latin American artists including Pedro Infante, Antonio Machín among others.

A beautiful and classic song, it’s a shame only a few knows about the origins of its lyrics.

Como Venezolano que soy, me sentí comprometido en hacer este post. En el nuevo álbum de covers de Cat Power “Jukebox“, pueden escuchar su versión de “Angelitos Negros”.

Angelitos Negros es un bello poema escrito por uno de los grandes íconos de Venezuela, el poeta/político Andrés Eloy Blanco que puede ser considerafo como un himno contra la discriminación racial.
Como canción, Angelitos Negros fue popularizada por una gran cantidad de músicos latino americanos incluyendo a Pedro Infante, Antonio Machín entre otros.

Una bella y clásica canción, lástima que pocos sepan el origen de su letra.
(y si, Cat Power cantó en español)

Vemeko talked to me about Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited, I didn’t know about that record until now.
Anyway, one of the tracks I liked the most was this cover made by Cat Power from the song: Je T’Aime Mon Non Plus. I could say I like it most than the original (just because the lack of the “gasp and sighs”)

Sabes cuando escuchas una canción o artista y dices: que con esa voz puede hacer contigo lo que sea, hace que el corazón se te ponga chiquito o te den ganas de sacar el violin o el cuchillo o de decir… “yo siento lo meeeeesmo”, así me pasó con Chan Marshall mejor conocida como “Cat Power”.

Esta atormentada compositora de música folk americana (generalmente tocaba ebria, gritaba al público o sólo hacía un concierto de 3 minutos porque le daba la gana, de igual forma los fans la adoran) está dando que hablar este año con su disco The Greatest.

La veterana, yo la conozco ahora, con este álbum ha encontrado mayor aceptación “comercial” que sus anteriores trabajos, muy relacionado está el hecho que ya tiene tiempo estando sobria (a pesar de haber estado hospitalizada al momento del lanzamiento del disco)

Sus entrevistas son un poema, enfocado más en su vida, su adicción al alcohol, sus demonios, que en su excelente música como tal.
Por ahora, se ve de lo mejor, sobria y es la nueva imagen de Chanel.

Hay algo en ella que no se.. me pone grrr.

Aquí 3 canciones, las primeras es de su disco The Greatest y la tercera es un cover de Velvet Undergroung…. no esperen cosas amenas, esto es folk inclinado al blues y country.

You know when you listen a song or an artist and immediately you find yourself saying “with that voice you can do whatever you want with me” or your heart becomes nothing or you want to say ” I feeel the saaaaame, give me the bottle”, well, that’s what happened to me with Chan Marshall, better known as “Cat Power”

This tormented composer of folk music (generally she played drunk, yelled at the public and in her worst moments she made “3 min” concerts) is the “talk” of music blogs and critics with her new album The Greatest (excellent reviews)

This veteran artist (I’ve just discovered her), has received the biggest commercial acceptance in all her career. One of the reasons could be that now she is sober and that’s reflected on her album (even though, she was hospitalized the moment her CD was released)

Her interviews are poems, focus on her life, her addiction to alcohol and not in her music. For now, she looks better, sober and btw, she’s the new face of Chanel.

There’s something about her… I don’t know, that makes me grrr.

Here’s 3 songs. Two of them from The Greatest, and the other one is a Velvet Underground cover…. Don’t expect something happy, this is folk music with blues and country.
