It’s not a secret my love for Mexican culture, in fact right now I’m desperately looking for any material of Sones de México Ensemble Chicago…. anyway, the point of this post is that I just received an excellent gift: Calexico – World Drifts In (Live at the Barbican London) DVD, two hours between songs and bonus material from this great band.

While I was watching the DVD, my surprise was to appreciate two songs taken from Mexican folklore music, these are in Spanish and accompanied by mariachis.

So, if you want to take the chance to listen these versions, here there are:
(don’t freak out!!!!, these are not like Hey Baby, ¿qué pasó?, but if you want that song I have it )

No es secreto mi empatía por la cultura mexicana, tanto con el país como su música, de hecho ahora ando buscando cualquier material de Sones de México Ensemble Chicago (porsi alguien por ahí tiene suerte de encontrarlo primero )….. ok, la intención del post es que recibí un gran regalo: Calexico – World Drifts In (Live at the Barbican London) DVD, más de 2 horas entre el concierto y material extra de esta gran banda.

El hecho es que mientras veía el DVD, mi sorpresa fue encontrarme con una interpretación de canciones del folkore mexicano, cantadas en español, acompañadas por mariachis. Asi que si quieres “tomar el reto” en escucharlas aquí están:
(no te preocupes, que estas no son como Hey Baby, ¿Qué Pasó?… pero si quieres esa canción también la tengo )

I’ve just checked Calexico’s new material titled “Toolbox”.
Burns and Convertino made an only-Instrumental album that will be available on tour and in their official store.

IMHO, this is an “only for fan” material and a gift for all the people who are waiting the next official album, but don’t get me wrong, there are good tracks such as The News About William, The Road Back, Above the Branch and my favorite Hair Like Spanish Moss… Tucson music for our pleasure.

At first moment “Hair Like Spanish Moss” sounds just like “He Lays in The Reins” which made my day :D, it’s the song that I highly recommend.

Acabo de revisar el nuevo material de Calexico titulado “Toolbox”
Burns y Convertino realizaron un CD totalmente instrumental el cual estará disponible en los conciertos y en la página oficial de la banda.

En mi opinion, en realidad este es un trabajo sólo para fans, sin embargo no quiero que me malinterpreten, hay muy buenas piezas tales como: The News About William, The Road Back, Above the Branch y mi favorita Hair Like Spanish Moss… más del sonido característico de Tucson para nuestro deleite.

En un primer instante “Hair Like Spanish Moss” suena igual a “He Lays in The Reins” el cual completó de hacer mi día :D, es por ello que esta canción es recomendada, pero como dije, sólo para fans, no esperen mucho de este trabajo, el potencial de Calexico no está reflejado en “Toolbox”.

Months ago I commented about this band which mixes the traditional Mexican music, mariachi, country, and the guitar sounds of California frontier…. the style of this band once was called as “Cactus Rock”.

For those who haven’t had the chance to listen Calexico (California + Mexico… duh!!!), its sound is more like an Ennio Morricone soundtrack without cowboys but with Kill Bill (Vol. 2)…. with a little bit of Grim Fandango (for those of you who are abandonware lovers).

I started to listen this band when I watched this movie Collateral… then the buzz started to rise when they recorded an EP with Iron & Wine (with excellents critics), then I started to “google” the band and voilá the rest is history.
In this post I’m not going to review one of their albums, this is just a recommendation, maybe a little bit slanted because I can’t listen a Mexican tune without getting nostalgic…. whatever….. the last album of the band is called Cruel Ruin and it has had good critics… kudos to the track “Rocka“. (this track seems to match perfect in a Frida Kahlo movie or a Chavela Vargas CD)

Un tiempito atrás comenté sobre esta banda que mezcla un rock guitarrero con su toque texano-mexico-folk… denominado por el comun denominador como “cactus rock”… Anyway, para los que todavía no han escuchado a Calexico su música pareciera ser una mezcla de Ennio Morricone pero sin vaqueros ni Chuck Norris sino más bien a la Kill Bill Vol 2, mezclado con Grim Fandango (jeje).

Yo los empecé a conocer fue porque están incluidos en la banda sonora de ” Colateral “, a su vez como que el hype aumentó cuando sacaron un EP junto con Iron & Wine bien lendo lendo que tuvo muy buenas críticas.

Puede que mi recomendación sea un poco sesgada en vista que no puedo escuchar una tonada medio mexicana norteña porque se me pone el corazón chiquito, pero de todas formas esta banda ya lleva unos cuantos díscos, el último lanzado en Abril de este año, ha cosechado sus buenas críticas aunque no me parece lo mejor de ellos.. se llama Cruel Ruin… y mi canción favorita de ese disco es “Rocka” .

Si les apetece escuchar ahí Calexico se les recomienda de todo corazón, yo amo a Mazeite.
