Q&A: Jeremy Barnes | A Hawk And A Hacksaw

Jeremy Barnes had the kindness to answer a few questions for Deaf Indie Elephants ahead of the release of A Hawk And A Hacksaw’s new album:
1. DIE: What was it like to work with The Hun Hangár Ensemble? What can you tell us about the recording process of this EP?
JB: [The Hun Hangár Ensemble] are great musicians and are well versed in a variety of music, not just Hungarian. They like Serbian, Romanian, the trumpeter loves Appalachian music, they all love jazz, so it is nice, we can do a lot of exploring.
In order to create this EP, I went to Budapest for a week last winter and recorded a selection of songs that Heather and I had worked out, I took them home and obsessed on them for a month, then it was done.
2. DIE: Listening A Hawk And A Hacksaw is a great experience and The Way The Wind Blows was well received for the audience and critics, so Why only 4.000 units will be released?
JB: The EP is not our official next album, it was a way to begin working with The Hun Hangar Ensemble, to prepare for our tours and to get to know each other.
3. DIE: I read that the name of the band came as a reference of Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote, are you interested on incorporate in your music new styles from other cultures for example Hispan-American sounds?
JB: Yes, this is one of the main goals of the band. Growing up in New Mexico, we became very fond of mariachi music and Spanish music as well. Charlie Haden’s record with the Liberation Music Orchestra is an example of how well that music can work mixed with other things. I hold that album up as an inspiration and something to aspire to. My favorite jazz records are all inspired by Spanish music: The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady (Mingus), Ole (Coltrane), Liberation Music Orchestra (Charlie Haden), Sketches of Spain (Miles Davis)
4. DIE: What was it like to work with Beirut? Will you collaborate again on their new album?, What about working with other artists?
JB: We will definitely continue working with other artists. The Beirut people are great, and they have a lovely enthusiasm. I hope we will work together sometime, but now we are miles and miles away.
5. DIE: Speaking about collaborations and side projects, in the future is there a chance to hear news about a Neutral Milk Hotel reunion?
JB: Not at this point.
6. DIE: What bands or music are you listening right now? What do you recommend?
JB: Istvan Szlvasi Gypsy Band, Zece Prajini Peasant Brass Band, Mogany, Benjamin Weatherill and Roger Cochini.
7. DIE: When will be released a new full-length album? Are you thinking of change directions on the way you are making music?
JB: We will begin recording in August, it will be in the same vein, but we have some new ideas to work out. No slap bass, no amplified instruments.
8. DIE: What’s on the horizon for the band?
JB: We are getting ready for a lot of touring, as a duo and with The Hun Hangars, so just traveling. I want to go to Istanbul, I had to put more pages in my passport.

1. DIE: ¿Cómo fue la experiencia al trabajar junto con The Hun Hangár Ensemble, qué puedes decirnos del proceso de grabación del EP?
JB: The Hun Hangár Ensemble son unos músicos geniales, muy conocedores de un gran abanico musical, no sólo Húngaro sino también Serbio, Rumano y música de Apalachia, todos aman al jazz por lo que fue agradable la experiencia, podemos hacer mucho musicalmente.
Para realizar el EP, me trasladé a Budapest por una semana el invierno pasado y grabé una selección de canciones que Heather y yo habíamos estado trabajando, luego me las llevé a casa y trabajé obsesivamente sobre ellas, a la final el disco estaba listo.
2. DIE: Escuchar A Hawk And A Hacksaw es una grata experiencia y The Way The Wind Blows fue muy bien recibido por la audiencia y crítica, por esta razón, ¿por qué lanzan sólo 4.000 unidades de este nuevo trabajo?
JB: Este EP no es nuestro próximo álbum oficial, fue una manera para empezar a trabajar con The Hun Hangár Ensemble, prepararnos para el tour y conocernos.
3. DIE: Recientemente leí que el nombre de la banda viene en referencia a Don Quijote de la Mancha, ¿están interesados en incorporar en su música nuevos estilos de otras culturas, por ejemplo sonidos hispanoamericanos?
JB: Si, ese es uno de los principales objetivos de la banda. Al vivir en Nuevo México, nos volvimos muy aficionados por la música mariachi y música española como tal. El disco de Charlie Haden con The Liberation Music Orchestra es un ejemplo de que tan bien ese tipo de música puede ser fusionada con otras cosas. Conservo ese álbum como una inspiración y como algo por el cual aspirar, además todos mis discos de jazz favoritos están influenciados por música española, ejemplo: The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady (Mingus), Ole (Coltrane), Liberation Music Orchestra (Charlie Haden), Sketches of Spain (Miles Davis)
4. DIE: ¿Cómo fue trabajar con Beirut? ¿Colaborarían nuevamente en su próximo álbum?, ¿Qué hay en trabajar con otros artistas?
JB: Definitivamente continuaremos trabajando con otras bandas. Por su parte los chicos de Beirut son geniales y tienen un gran entusiasmo, espero que trabajemos juntos nuevamente, pero por ahora nos encontramos muy distanciados geográficamente.
5. DIE: Hablando de colaboraciones y proyectos paralelos, ¿en el futuro hay alguna oportunidad de escuchar noticias sobre una reunión de Neutral Milk Hotel?
JB: No por los momentos.
6. DIE: ¿Qué bandas escuchas actualmente que podrías recomendar?
JB: Istvan Szlvasi Gypsy Band, Zece Prajini Peasant Brass Band, Mogany, Benjamin Weatherill y Roger Cochini.
7. DIE: ¿Trabajaran en un nuevo LP?, ¿Piensan cambiar de dirección respecto al estilo en que hacen música?
JB: Empezaremos a grabar en Agosto para el nuevo álbum, será sobre la misma “vena musical” pero tenemos algunas nuevas ideas en que trabajar, por ejemplo: no “slap bass”, ni instrumentos amplificadores.
8. DIE: ¿Qué hay en el horizonte para la banda?
JB: Nos estamos preparando para el tour junto con The Hun Hangár Ensemble, asi que por los momentos viajaremos. Quiero ir a Estambul, necesito colocar más páginas a mi pasaporte.

A Hawk And A Hacksaw And The Hun Hangár Ensemble es el nuevo trabajo del duo conformado por Jeremy Barnes (mejor conocido como el baterista de Neutral Milk Hotel) y la violinista Heather Trost, que será lanzado este 7 de Mayo.
Tuve el placer de escucharlo, y nuevamente como The Way the Wind Blows, este EP nos brinda lo mejor de la música de Europa Oriental y de los Balcanes. En 8 canciones la talentosa banda trabajó con un grupo de músicos Húngaros llamado “The Hun Hangár Ensemble” y este disco es el resultado de tal excelente combinación.
Algo que debo agregar, musicalmente sigue manteniendo la misma vena que su trabajo anterior, pero esta es una edición especial limitada a sólo 4.000 copias, viene junto con un bonus DVD en el que muestran un documental sobre los últimos 2 años de tour de la banda por Europa, detrás de cámaras, presentaciones en Nuevo México.
Recomendado para todo aquel que guste de este tipo de música y para aquellos que quieran darle una oportunidad a la banda. Más abajo chequeen un video de ellos en vivo.

A Hawk And A Hacksaw And The Hun Hangár Ensemble is the new work of duo Jeremy Barnes (better known as Neutral Milk Hotel drummer) and violinist Heather Trost, to be released on 7th May.
I had the pleasure to listen it, and just like The Way the Wind Blows, this EP brings us the best of Eastern European and Balkan music. In 8 songs the talented band worked with a group of Hungarian Folk musicians called “The Hun Hangár Ensemble” and this album is the result of that fabulous combination.
Just one thing I have to mention, this is a limited edition EP, only 4.000 copies will be available worldwide, also it comes with a bonus DVD Documentary of the last two years of tour of the band across Europe, behind the scenes and live footage in New Mexico

In June I wrote a review about last musical blog sensation “Beirut” and I became an obsessive fan of his album. Let’s remember Gulag Orkestar was recorded with the help of Jeremy Barnes (drummer of indie cult band Neutral Milk Hotel) and Heather Trost, creating a journey to balcanic music, and also, one of the best debuts of this year.
If you liked Beirut, you should listen his godfathers, following the same style, adopting the sounds of Eastern Europe. This duet: A Hawk and A Hacksaw (with one of the best band names in my opinion) are here with their third album “The Way The Wind Blows” and the result is excellent. Here’s a track-by-track review:
In the River: The first notes of this song tell us the way this album takes, its slow rhythm has a Bolero Ravel resemblance but in a balcanic style. This track maintains its melody without reaching a climax. 4.5/5
The Way The Wind Blows: My favorite song of the album, the violin is the main player of this balcanic tango. 5/5
One of the aspects this album is characterized is that the majority of the songs seem to be conceived in a gypsy caravan and in a funeral procession. The following tracks have this thing in common:
Song for Joseph: Funeral 4/5
Fernando’s Giampari: caravan 4/5
God Bless The Ottoman Empire: Caravan, trying to reach a climax… until you go to Waltz For Strings And Tuba. 4.5/5
Waltz For Strings And Tuba: Waltz… Nino Rota’s best style. 5/5
Oporto: Ok, If you want to be sad this is your song (1:20 min), it’s an appetizer to prepare you to the next track 4/5
GaDje Sirba: Nice, full of trumpets, I could say it’s a Sabre Dance part 2 hehe, saving the differences. 5/5.
The Sparrow: Following the same rhythm of the last track but with the violin as the main player. (Shakira must dance these songs) 4/5
Salt Water: I really don’t like this song, it’s a way to say goodbye, closing circles and warning us that the album is ending. Slow and dark. 3.5/5
There Is A River In Galisteo: Actually it’s not a song, in its minute this one repeats the first words of the album’s opening.
This album is a great experience, it blows your mind with its Eastern Europe melodies.. and if you has a lamp, probably a genie comes up.

Meses atrás hice un post sobre la última sensación musical bloguera Beirut y me convertí en admirador obsesivo del álbum. Recordemos que Gulag Orkestar fue grabado con la ayuda de Jeremy Barnes (baterista de la banda indie de culto Neutral Milk Hotel) y Heather Trost, creando uno de los mejores discos del año con ese viaje a la música balcánica.
Si te gustó Beirut, pues debes escuchar a sus padrinos, siguiendo el mismo estilo al adoptar los sonidos de la Europa Oriental. Este duo, A Hawk and A Hacksaw (además de contar con un gran nombre) vienen con su tercer grabación discográfica The Way The Wind Blows y el resultado no es nada mal. He aquí track por track:
In the River: Las primeras notas de este track nos adentra a lo que nos encontraremos a lo largo del álbum, se caracteriza por un ritmo pausado, muy “a la” Bolero Ravel pero en un ambiente balcánico, sin llegar a un climax, sino más bien manteniendo su melodía constante. 4.5/5
The Way The Wind Blows: Mi canción favorita del álbum, el violín es el protagonista principal de este tango de los balcanes. 5/5
Una de los aspectos que caracteriza el álbum es que la mayoría de las canciones pareciera que fuesen sacadas de una caravana gitana y de una procesión funeral. Los que cumplen estos aspectos son los siguientes tracks:
Song for Joseph: Funeral 4/5
Fernando’s Giampari: Caravana 4/5
God Bless The Ottoman Empire: Caravana, con un tono que va aumentando progresivamente hasta que… llegas a Waltz For Strings And Tuba. 4.5/5
Waltz For Strings And Tuba: Vals al mejor estilo de Nino Rota. 5/5
Oporto: Ok, pásame el cuchillo por esta pieza de un minuto 20 seg para deprimirse, buen abreboca para la festividad que se avecina en el siguiente track. 4/5
GaDje Sirba: Llena de trompetas (o no se si será otro instrumento, ya todo me suena igual)… podría decir que es un Sabre Dance parte 2 jeje, salvando las diferencias. 5/5.
The Sparrow: Siguiendo el mismo ritmo e intensidad del anterior corte pero con el violín como protagonista, Shakira ya quisiera verte bailar estas canciones. 4/5
Salt Water: El track que menos me llama la atención, es una manera de ir ya cerrando ciclos y avisando que ya el disco llega a su final, pausado y oscuro predomina la batería. 3.5/5
There Is A River In Galisteo: No la considero canción en si, en su minuto de duración repite la frase con la que comenzó el disco.
Este álbum es una grata experiencia, al dejarte llevar por sus melodías, dejándote esa sensación de valses en los balcanes. (err… si, me puse intenso), y si te descuidas y tienes una lámpara te sale un genio.
