Deaf Indie Elephants

The stream of new Sigur Rós album is available since yesterday. Overall I really liked it, for me it’s better than Takka and even though it has the same style as prior works, it seems that Gobbledigook was the beginning of a new experiment, there’s some change in their proposal, a little refresh.

For me, this album has 3 stages:

1st Stage:: Upbeat – Pop: Includes the first 4 songs, this is the stage of “change”, upbeat songs and shorter as they used to do. I don’t mean these are mainstream or commercial songs because it’s totally false, but they are more accessible to the public without losing their Icelandic essence.
Favorites: Gobbledigook and Inní mér syngur vitleysingur (the last one is my big recommendation)

2nd Stage:: Intermediate – Inflection: Includes tracks 5, 6, 7. In this stage they make a stop and take up again their old style, that means… longer and epic songs.

- Festival: 9 epic minutes of glory and “yusó”
- Med sud í eyrum: this is the middle of the record, the inflection point preparing you to the last stage.
- Ára Bátur: the end of the intermediate, 8:57 minutes with a climax, this is the Goosebumps song, the perfect one to be played in concert, this is like the second coming of Jesus Christ. (Specially the last orchestral minutes)
Favorites: Festival and Ára Bátur.

3rd stage:: Quiet Ending. The last 4 songs are short songs but this time more quiet, less popish, there’s nothing more to tell about this stage except for “All Alright”, this is the first song in English of the band. But to be sincere I didn’t understand Jónsi’s english
Favorite: Fljótavík

Verdict: 4/5. A solid album, I really wanted more risk from the band but at least I’m happy with those “popish” short songs. And let’s be honest, when it comes to Sigur Rós, is mandatory to listen epic songs, with a lot of “aaauuuuuu”, “yusó”, goosebumps and a little smile at the end.

El nuevo disco de Sigur Rós está disponible en stream para todos desde ayer, en términos generales me gusto, para mi es mejor que Takka y a pesar que mantienen su inigualable estilo, se ve que Gobbledigook fue sólo un pequeño experimento que les quedó muy bien. No obstante hay un cambio en su propuesta aunque sea mínima, existe un refresh.

Considero que este álbum tiene 3 etapas:

1ra Etapa:: Upbeat – Pop: Representado por las primeras 4 canciones, etapa de cambio caracterizado por canciones más cortas y más amenas a las que ellos acostumbran hacer, no quiero decir que sean mainstream o comerciales ni mucho menos “que se vendieron” porque es totalmente falso, pero si son más accesibles… eso si, sin perder su estilo propio.
Las que destacan: Gobbledigook y Inní mér syngur vitleysingur (esta última para mi una de mis favoritas)

2da Etapa:: Intermedio - Inflexión. Representado por los tracks 5, 6, 7. Esta etapa se caracteriza principalmente por hacer un stop y volver al Sigur Rós de siempre con canciones largas.

- Festival: es una especie de fin de la 1ra estación, 9 minutos épicos y de “yusó”
- Med sud í eyrum: viene siendo la mitad del disco, preparándote para el último tramo, una especie de punto de inflexión.
- Ára Bátur: el fin del intermedio, 8:57 minutos con un final de climax, la canción “piel de gallina”, la que en vivo debe ser igual a la segunda venida de Jesús. (especialmente los últimos minutos orquestrales)
Las que destacan: Festival y Ára Bátur.

3ra Etapa:: Tranquilidad - Desenlace. Las últimas 4 canciones mantienen el esquema de “canciones cortas” pero esta vez siendo más tranquilas, menos pop, no hay mucha novedad en esta etapa excepto por “All alright” que si no me dicen que es en inglés de verdad no la hubiese distinguido.
La que destaca: Fljótavík.

Veredicto final: 4/5. Disco sólido, hubiese preferido que se arriesgaran más, pero ese cambio a “canciones pop” para mi están muy bien y vamos estar claro cuando es Sigur Rós es “mandatorio” que nos canten con aullidos “aaauuuuaaaa”, “yusos” y terminen el disco con varias pieles de gallinas en el camino y una sonrisa al final.
