Antony And The Johnsons – I Am A Bird Now (2005)

Aja, se que esto es viejo, pero tenía desde hace tiempo ganas de hacerle review, se lo debía al álbum como también a un amigo para ver si lo escucha.
Antony And The Johnsons, los conocí precisamente por este disco: “I Am A Bird Now” (2005) y vaya que quedé enganchado en su momento, este segundo trabajo, es tan desgarrador y a la vez esperanzador que no dudes que en algún momento puede que te haga sacar una lágrima sin darte cuenta.
Un trabajo muy intimista y así debe ser escuchado: en la comodidad de tu casa. Tiene aires de blues, jazz, soul y gospel (pero en general quisiera referirme como música de cabaret) que se ven reforzados por el piano y la voz de Antony, que puede ir desde lo más sutil a algo bien potente que de a primeras me hacen recordar a Nina Simone.
Sin embargo, el álbum puede llegar a ser muy triste o “sufrido” pero al terminar sabes que has estado ante canciones sublimes, en especial me refiero al primer single “Hope There’s Someone”, si no te convences con esta canción pues que pena, porque es para mi una de las mejores composiciones tanto del álbum como en ese año en particular.
Ok, no puedo olvidar que parte de la bulla que levantó Antony viene por su imagen totalmente andrógina que viene de la escena “undergound” de los clubes de NY, a la final no se si es gay o sólo travesti o su actitud se limita a su adoración por Boy George. Lo que si es que lo ha llevado a las canciones con oraciones como “one day I’ll grow old, I’ll be a beautiful girl but for today I am a boy” o títulos como “I Fell In Love With a Dead Boy” y en parte el morbo sobre su vida y las letras es lo que ha generado publicidad gratis y atención.
En fin, ha sido esa actitud y esas amistades que hacen de este disco uno de los grandes (por no decir de culto), Boy George lo acompaña en “You’re my sister”, Lou Reed en “Fistful Of Love” (la segunda mejor canción del álbum para mi), al igual que el canadiense Rufus Wainwright, y el venezolano/texano Devendra Banhart. El disco ganó la edición 2005 del Mercury Prize en Inglaterra (que fue bien criticado en vista que su carrera se ha desarrollado en NYC) y está entre lo mejor del 2005 en Amazon. Que más puedo decir pues espero que lo puedas disfrutar. (no tiene nada que ver con Sufjan asi que puedes estar tranquilo con ello)
Por cierto, en la elegante portada del disco quien posa es Candy Darling… transexual, musa de Andy Warhol (chequea su historia que ya por ahí empieza el morbo por el disco)

Yep, I know this is old stuff, but I really wanted to review it.
I discovered Antony and the Johnsons precisely for this album and it was a great experience. This second work is so hopeful and also depressive that probably you will shed a tear.
An album very private and that’s the way it should be listened: in the comfort of your home. It has mixed styles: blues, jazz, soul and gospel (overall: cabaret music) that it’s enhanced by the piano and the “fragile / strong” Antony’s voice.
Nonetheless, I advise you, this work can be very sad but in the end you KNOW you have listened to sublime songs, specially “Hope there’s someone” (for me one of the best songs of the album and for that year).
I can’t forget to tell you; one of the reasons of their success is because the androgynous look of Antony that comes from the “underground” scene of NYC clubs. I don’t know if he’s gay or transvestite or his attitude is limited to his adoration to Boy George. What I know is that his lyrics such as “one day I’ll grow old, I’ll be a beautiful girl but for today I am a boy” or titles as “I Fell In Love With a Dead Boy” are reasons for his free publicity and media attention.
Finally, it’s that attitude and friendships that made this album one of the biggest works of 2005: Boy George joined him in “You’re my sister”, Lou Reed in “Fistful of Love” (my second favorite song of the album), also the Canadian Rufus Wainwright, and the Venezuelan/Texan Devendra Banhart. This album won the 2005 Mercury Prize in England and is on the Top 10 of Amazon Best of 2005.
By the way, the “model” of the elegant cover of the album is candy Darling, a transsexual, muse of Andy Warhol.

No seré de los que conoce la banda desde sus inicios, es más soy de los que defiende a muerte el “Digital Ash in a Digital Urn” en vez del “I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning”. En base a lo anterior, debo decir que me agradó totalmente el Ep “Four Winds”
Un buen anticipo para lo que sera su nuevo LP, en 6 tracks que van entonados más al estilo country que se puede apreciar en los singles “Four Winds” y “Cartoon Blues”, es de notar la influencia melancólica acústica en “Smoke Without Fire” y “Tourist Trap” gracias a la colaboración de M. Ward, sin olvidarse del toque indie folk en “Reinventing the Wheel” y “Stray Dog Freedom”, de igual manera, los que aman “I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning” no deberían sentirse defraudados.
En fin, sólo queda un mes para Casadaga. ya empezaremos nuevamente con el debate si Conor Orbest es el nuevo Dylan o no.

I’m not one of those guys who knows this band from its beginnings; in fact I defend “Digital Ash in a Digital Urn” than “I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning”.
Considering this, I should say I really like “Four Winds” EP.
It’s a good preview for what is going to be the new LP, in 6 tracks this CD goes through a country sound you can appreciate in “Four Winds” and “Cartoon Blues”. There’s an acoustic melancholy influence in “Some Without Fire” and “Tourist Trap” thanks to the collaboration of M. Ward, and also I can’t forget to mention the indie folk side in “Reinventing The Wheel” and “Stray Dog Freedom”, this album shouldn’t disappoint all of you who like “I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning”.
Anyway, just one month for the release of Casadaga, we’ll start again with the neverending debate: is Conor Orbest the new Dylan?

De esa manera empieza esta película. Para aquellos que no sepan de que se trata, permítanme contarles: Screaming Masterpiece es un documental del año 2005 que trata sobre la escena musical de Islandia. Entre presentaciones musicales y entrevistas por Björk, Sigur Rós, Múm y otros te permitirán viajar alrededor de “1000 años de música islandesa” para finalmente hacer una reverencia a este pequeño país.
Siempre que hay una referencia a la música de Islandia es porque generalmente se habla de Björk, y recientemente Sigur Rós. Pero, gracias a esta película pude notar que existen infinidades de bandas y diferentes estilos: desde el punk de los 80’s, rap electrónica, pop hasta llegar al rock & roll. Es fascinante saber la diversidad musical entre los grupos presentados en el filme que es tan alejado al pensamiento “medieval, vikingo y frío” que viene a la mente cuando se trata del país.
¿Por qué esta música es tan especial? Como se puede ver en el documental, cada banda está consciente que es difícil vender por lo menos más de 200 copias, también están limitados por su presupuesto y por la falta de equipos, por lo tanto intentan hacer lo mejor que pueden, es decir “hacer música para su propio disfrute” y ese sentimiento lo puedes sentir al escuchar sus canciones.
La banda sonora cuenta con tracks de las presentaciones mostradas en el film, y de verdad es especial el disco, así como el documental. Lo único “malo” es que tienden a extenderse mucho en esos performances, preferiría ver más opiniones y entrevistas de las bandas para saber más de sus historias, pero es de notar que el DVD cuenta con al menos 2 horas de contenido extra, por lo tanto este filme hay que tenerlo.

That’s the way this movie begins. For those of you who don’t know what this movie is about, let me tell you: Screaming Masterpiece is a 2005 documentary about Iceland music scene. Among interviews and performances by Björk, Sigur Rós, Múm and others you will explore around “1000 years of Icelandic Music” to finally take a bow about this country.
When it comes to icelandic music, I always say Björk or Sigur Rós. But, thanks to this movie I could realize there’re a lot of bands and different styles: from 80’s punk, rap, electronic, pop to rock & roll. It’s awesome to know the musical diversity among all the groups presented in this documentary that is very far from the “medieval, viking and cold” belief that comes with the country.
Why is this music so special? As you can see on the film, every band knows that is hard to sell at least more than 200 copies, also they don’t have the budget or the necessary equipment, so they try to do the best thing they can: “music for their own pleasure” and generally you can sense that feeling.
The OST has tracks from the performances presented in this film, and it’s fascinating. The only “bad thing” about this movie is that they take so much time showing the musical performances, I’d rather watch more opinions from the bands and history, but in the DVD Edition there’s at least 2 hours of bonus content, so this is surely a must have.

Si hay una canción que jamás me canse de escuchar tiene que ser esta: California Dreamin’ por The Mamas & The Papas
Fue escrita en 1963 por John y Michelle Phillips y fue inspirada por la nostalgia que tenía John sobre su ciudad (California) cuando estaba viviendo en el frío invierno de New York.
Esta canción fue el primer single de la banda y su gran hit. Se dice que gracias a ella fue que llegaron a ser la gran banda exitosa y de gran reconocimiento que fueron.

It was written in 1963 by John and Michelle Phillips and was inspired by John’s nostalgia about his city (California) when they were living in the cold winter of New York.
This song was the first single and big hit for the band. It’s said that because of this song they earned all the big success they got.

The Arcade Fire – Neon Bible (2007)

En el 2004, apadrinados por David Bowie, la pegaron en el techo con Funeral convirtiéndose en la banda a exportar por excelencia de Montreal. En el 2007, aunado a una ingeniosa campaña de intriga, un número telefónico, el percance de itunes, el progresivo filtro de canciones en internet y con los conciertos promocionales totalmente vendidos tocados en iglesias llega al fin su esperado segundo trabajo Neon Bible y he aquí mi opinión fuera de toda objetividad.
Superar algo como Funeral es totalmente complicado, de hecho Neon Bible corresponde a las expectativas que se tenía alrededor de la banda, pero compararlo con su trabajo debut es un poco “sádico”, son ópticas distintas que no llegaría al caso relacionarlos. Existirán quienes prefieran Funeral a muerte pero no creo que Neon Bible genere malas críticas, no debería (siempre y cuando se mantenga al margen su comparación con su debut)
Algo que hay que recalcar es que Neon Bible con la participación del ógano se oye pomposo, demasiado orquestal (algo que me agrada) o como yo diría “Arcade Fire goes Phantom Of The Opera” que se puede notar en canciones como Black Mirror, Intervention y el cierre de My Body Is A Cage, por cierto excelente inicio y final para el álbum.
Las letras mantienen su estilo dramático en el que la vida y la muerte toman lugar y se ve reforzado por las voces de Win y Regine. Momentos especiales muchos, desde la ambigüedad de Black Wave/Bad Vibrations (si.. la comentada segunda parte de la canción), My Body is a Cage como final del disco, pero para mi la nueva versión de No Cars Go como un TODO es lo mejor del álbum.
En fin, el gran problema de Arcade Fire es que vivirá bajo la sombra de Funeral, sin embargo este CD es un fuerte sucesor, un álbum bien completo y agradable que hizo valer la pena su espera y que a la fecha (tomando en consideración que está sonando desde hace mes y medio) se ha mantenido en mi actual rotación musical. En mi lista de lo mejor del año, sigue a la cabeza.

In 2004, sponsored by David Bowie, Funeral was their first and unbreakable work turning the band as the most intriguing from Montreal. In 2007, with an ingenious campaign, a telephone number, the itunes incident, the progressive leak of songs and with the promotional sold out concerts played only in churches, they return with Neon Bible, the second album.
Exceed something like Funeral is totally complicated, in fact, Neon Bible satisfies the big expectations around the band, but is a little bit unusual to compare it with the first album, those albums have different optics and contexts in their process.
There’s something to tell about Neon Bible, the organ made an interesting participation in the making of, this CD sounds very orchestral, pompous (which I like) or as I say “Arcade Fire goes Phantom Of The Opera”, you can notice this in songs such as Black Mirror, Intervention and My Body is a Cage (by the way, excellent beginning and end for an album).
The lyrics kept their dramatic style where life and death are the main topics with the sincere voices of Win and Regine. Special moments: the ambiguity of Black Wave/Bad Vibrations (yep, that second part of the song) and My Body is a Cage as the end of the album, but for me the new version of No Cars Go is by far the best of Neon Bible.
Anyway IMHO, the big problem of Arcade Fire is that they have to live under the shadow of Funeral. But, this CD is a strong follow-up; a complete album that made worthy the entire wait and at this moment (considering the leak almost two months ago) is still in my current music playlist, and also in my list of best of the year they are on top.
