Recuerdo durante mi infancia los fines de semana calándome los maratones musicales que mis padres se echaban con los LP de Juan Gabriel, Alí Primera, las Rocío (Jurado, Dúrcal), Dyango, etc (venga, eran MEGA-maratones, con whiskey incluido que lo único que faltaba era el piano de cola). Esa colección de LP fue evolucionando con los gustos musicales de mi hermano empezando por Menudo, Los Pitufos (bichooo), Alice Cooper, Wilson Phillips, Jon Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, INXS, Madonna, Queensryche y Guns ‘n Roses, el cual yo di mi toque infantil con el LP de Los Simpsons.
En fin, con el tiempo el espacio físico era vital y se vio la necesidad de irse “deshaciendo de todo eso”… es por ello que ya con más uso de razón, para mi esa cultura de idolatrar al LP es lastimosamente nula.
Llegaron los CD’s pero se mantuvo el ritual de comprarlos para escucharlos de la A a la Z, llevándonos chascos respectivos y encontrándonos con joyas, discos conceptuales, cover art para recordar, etc.
Y llegaron los MP3’s y de alguna manera quieras o no cambian la concepción de escuchar y adquirir música ya sea para bien o mal…. independientemente de ello, siempre estaremos los que quieren su hard jewel case (o vinyl), hojear “el librito”, arrecharse cuando el librito no trae nada y leer las letras… aunque hoy en día en su gran mayoría la música fluya dentro de un dispositivo electrónico.
Es por ello que me llamó la atención una campaña que varios artistas junto con la tienda de discos de música independiente Insound crearon el año pasado llamado Save The Album, esta campaña persigue la idea de defender el LP y el CD como formato musical con el fin que no desaparezcan con la llegada y evolución de las nuevas tecnologías y modelos de compra de canciones.
La tienda Insound se une al vender MP3 de los álbumes completos, nada de single separados, además de su usual catálogo de CD’s y LP’s… a su vez, varios músicos indie se unieron al hacer pequeñas entrevistas contando historias de sus álbumes favoritos, cómo lo consiguieron, canciones que más gustan, etc etc.
En esta dirección está algunos videos (en inglés solamente), el que me gustó fue el de Devendra Banhart en el que sus favoritos van desde Caetano Veloso hasta Antony And The Johnsons, sin olvidar su crianza en Venezuela al hacer una reseña a Simón Díaz. (cantante y compositor de música del folklore venezolano, cuyo trabajo es considerado uno de los más importantes legados tanto para su país como para la música popular latinoamericana**)

En lo personal, esto de hacer listas de favoritos para aplicarlo en mi vida es heaaaavy, pero a vuelo de pájaro podría decir de una manera muy fugaz y vaga que estos entrarían de a cajón en lo que se refiere a discos que me tripeo de la A a la Z, sin orden de preferencia:

I remember during my childhood, the musical marathons of my parents, all the weekends listening LP’s of Juan Gabriel, Alí Primera, Rocío Jurado, Rocío Dúrcal, Dyango, etc (it was the MARATHON with whiskey, the only thing left was a piano to play with, hehe). I finished that LP collection with my childish taste with The Simpsons Sing The Blues album.
Whatever…. Time passes us by, and the physical space was
Fundamental inside home, so the FAMILY decided to get rid of that “stuff”…. For that reason when I grew up, the feeling of idolize the LP is unfortunately non-existent for me.
The Cd’s came to us and we keep the culture of buying them in order to listen them from A to Z. We had historical great works to remember and also shit music.
Finally the MP3’s arrived and changed the way we listen and acquire music, for bad or for good. Regardless of that issue, there will be the people who like their hard jewel case (or vinyl), to look at the booklet, to get mad when the booklet is shit and to read the lyrics, even though nowadays music flows inside an electronic gadget.
For that case, I wanted to talk about a campaign led by Insound.com and several indie musicians launched last year named “Save The Album”.
This campaign follows the idea of defending the LP and CD as a musical format in order to preserve them against the evolution of new technologies and business models to acquire songs on Internet.
The indie music store Insound.com joined the campaign launching its service of selling digital music but only for the complete album, not individual singles.
At the same moment, indie musicians recorded short video clips telling stories about their favorite albums, their favorites songs and how they got them, etc.

The interview I liked the most was the one with Devendra Banhart, his favorites albums go from Caetano Veloso to Antony And The Johnsons. He didn’t forget his childhood in Venezuela because he made a review of Simón Díaz (singer and composer of Venezuelan music, whose work is regarded as one of the most important legacies for both Venezuelan and Latin American popular music**)
