Ahí donde terminó Return To Cookie Mountain en el 2006, llega este mes el para mi primer disco oficial “hypeado” del año.
Friend and Foe de Menomena, cómo catalogarlo?…. Ni la más remota idea, empezando con el single “Muscle’n Foe” me dije que iban por un camino a lo Wolf Parade… bien equivocado estuve, no hay linealidad en el álbum, cada canción es única y distinta a la otra, tanto así que me llegó a recordar cuando escuché TVOTR.
Igual que Cookie Mountain, este disco se hace difícil de digerir, y no es porque sea malo sino porque te puedes perder dentro de todos los arreglos, los saxofones, dios los saxofones!!! y experimentos que la banda le inyecta, sin embargo siempre buscan la melodía y esa canción “pop” para enganchar, y esta es la clave del éxito instantáneo que están disfrutando.
Dentro de las listas del 2007??? Puedes contar con ello.

In 2006 was Return to Cookie Mountain, 2007 starts with IMHO the first hyped album of the year.
Menomena’s Friend and Foe, I don’t know how to classify this one. At first, with the single Muscle’n Foe I thought, “this is a Wolf Parade style”. Naaaaah, totally wrong. There’s no linearity in the album, every song is different one of another, it reminds me the first time I listened TVOTR.
Just like Cookie Mountain, this album is difficult to hear. It’s not a bad record but you can lose yourself among all the mixes, the saxo!!!!, and all the experiments the band injected. Nonetheless, they always reach the melodies and the “pop” side of the song… and that’s the key of their instantaneous success.
Best of 2007 so far????? You can count on it.

Shoegaze es un estilo de rock alternativo nacido en la Inglaterra de finales de los 80’s gracias a My Bloody Valentine, se caracteriza por la distorsión de guitarras y la creación de escenarios atmosféricos aunados con voces en plan de “susurro”(**)
Serena Maneesh fácilmente entra en este tipo de estilo, esta banda noruega debutó en el 2005 con un sólido álbum en el cual logran crear cierta actitud y estilo único más que referirnos a que sean unos wannabe o unos revival del shoegazing.
Aunque suene muy cliché el asunto, obviamente están influidos por My Bloody Valentine y a Sonic Youth pero más darky y quizás góticos (??): las guitarras distorsionadas, las voces/ecos ala Kim Gordon, lo estridente de sus melodías y los cambios sorpresivos de estilo. Hay mucho “ruido” en sus canciones pero congeniando con ese lado melódico que a la final saben como equilibrarlo para terminar con algo muy especial.

Shoegaze is a style of alternative rock that emerged in southern England in the late 1980s by My Bloody Valentine. Common musical elements in Shoegaze are distortion from noisy guitars and Vocals typically subdued in volume and tone. (**)
Serena Maneesh easily can be considered in this style, the Norwegian band debuted in 2005 with a solid album, which could create an unique attitude and style far from the hype and from the revival- fever.
I know it sounds as a cliché, obviously their influences are My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, but more dark and gothic (??), among others: the distortions of the guitars, the voices/echoes ala Kim Gordon, the strident melodies and the changes in their compositions.
There’s noise in their songs but getting along with that melodic side. Finally they know how to equilibrate it with something special.

Beirut Lon Gisland EP (2007)

Para apaciguar la espera del próximo ábum de Beirut (acompañado por Owen Pallet de Arcade Fire aka Final Fantasy), Zach Condon lanzó un EP de 5 canciones siguiendo el mismo estilo del disco Gulag Orkestar.
En realidad este EP es una excusa para nombrarlo y hacer el primer post del año sobre Beirut. Lon Gisland no trae nada nuevo que no se haya escuchado en el anterior trabajo, sigue con la onda balcánica característica y que muy bien enganchó en el 2006, es verdad Afrael: el man es artesanal.
A destacar, la excelente y nostálgica Elephant Gun y My Family’s Role in the World Revolution (fiesta gitana total), además de presentar Carrousel una de sus canciones tocadas incansablemente en vivo que no había tenido su contraparte en estudio. Nuevamente, recomendado para cuando mochilees por Europa Oriental.

In order to relax all the fans who want the next album of Beirut (with Arcade Fire’s Owen Pallet aka Final Fantasy), Zach Condon released an EP of 5 songs, following the same style from Gulag Orkestar album.
In fact, this EP is just an excuse, I just wanted to write a post about Beirut this year. There’s nothing new in the sound of Lon Gisland, balcanic-indie style 100%, but that style was the key for his success last year.
Recommended: the nostalgic song Elephant Gun and the gipsy-party My Family’s Role in the World Revolution. Carrousel song, the one he played in concert now saw the light on an album.
One more time, this album, and this band is highly recommended for your travels all around East Europe.

Hay un blog bien interesante de música: La Blogotheque, es en francés.
La principal razón por el cual reviso el site es por una sección llamada Les Concerts A Emporter o como lo llaman en inglés: “The Take Away Shows”
Este video podcast semanal nos muestra presentaciones de bandas, grabadas sin cortes, en diferentes lugares: las calles de París, baños, cuartos, restaurants, bares, etc. Son sesiones bien urbanas y en cierta parte irreverentes, las bandas tocan con lo que tengan a la mano, cajas de cervezas, mesas de futbolito, los peatones los acompañan, etc, etc… tienen que ser espontáneos, cualquier cosa puede suceder.

The main reason I check this site is for a section named Les Concerts A Emporter or as they call it in English: “The Take Away Shows”
This weekly video podcast presents us live performances of bands, recorded in one shot, in different places such as: the streets of Paris, a bedroom, a bar, a bathroom, etc. These are very urban and also freaky sessions, the bands play with anything they have: a foosball table, cases of beer and yada yada yada… they have to be spontaneous, anything can happen.

Luego de una conversa con un pana bloguero en el que salió a relucir el tango “Por Una Cabeza” de Carlos Gardel y Alfredo Le Pera, me dispuse a buscar distintas versiones de la canción para ver con que me encontraba. A la final, luego de muchos archivos mal nombrados, logré separar 15 canciones entre instrumentales, en vivo y obviamente la original. OJO: los derechos de esta canción está para el dominio público, de ahí que se ha usado en una gran cantidad de películas.
Compuesta en 1935, Por Una Cabeza, el gran tango en la que metafóricamente se compara las apuestas a los caballos con la seducción de una mujer, sigue tan viva a pesar de llevar más de 70 años.

Chating with a blogger buddy we started to talk about Carlos Gardel’s tango Por Un Cabeza, after that I was checking versions of the song. Finally I could select 15 different tracks among instrumentals, live performance and the original.

Of Montreal – Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? (2007)

When I was getting inside this world of indie music, one of the first bands I like the most were Of Montreal, with his psychedelic dance party style they got me instantly. “Dance party” like Scissor Sister (saving differences) but in a indie kind of way. Psycho is the best word that defines their style.
The Sunlandic Twins, the only album that I’ve heard (people say Satanic Panic in the Attic is the best album) included great songs such as Requiem For O.M.M.2 (an anthem for me), The Party’s Crashing Us, Forecast Fascist Future and Wraith Pinned To The Mist And Other Game, that made me bought the album immediately, for that reason my expectations on their new album were bigger.
With Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?, they present themselves with the same sound, in order to satisfy the fans, not to explore new directions. Their assertive first single Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse is a instantaneous hit, it doesn’t seem that have passed two years since the last record.
Their usual loops, the claps of hands and the real/virtual falsetto of Kevin Barnes doesn’t make me think this is a better album compared to their previous works, nonetheless it’s a perfect complement to Sunlandic Twins (even though the songs are very linear…. Except for the 12 minutes song (exhausting)

Cuando me adentraba a este mundo de música indie rara que casi nadie escucha, al menos en Venezuela… Una de las primeras bandas a la que le agarré el gusto rápidamente fue Of Montreal, que con su nota psicodélica “dance party” fue el gancho perfecto para que me enviciara. Es un “dance party” pero en una línea distinta a la que ofrece Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem y afines, tampoco es changa, precisamente psicodelia es la palabra que mejor define su estilo….. (vamos a ver, son los Scissor Sister indie salvando diferencias obvias)
The Sunlandic Twins, el único disco que he escuchado de ellos (dicen que Satanic Panic in the Attic es mejor) contó con grandes canciones como Requiem For O.M.M.2 (corta, agradable… para mi HIMNO en mayúscula sostenida), The Party’s Crashing Us, Forecast Fascist Future y Wraith Pinned To The Mist And Other Games que hicieron que comprara el CD inmediatamente, es por ello que para su nuevo álbum había cierta expectativa de mi parte en corroborar si hay vida en esto de las bandas indies.
Con Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?, se presentan con el mismo sonido y con la intención de satisfacer a los fans más allá de querer explorar nuevas direcciones. Su acertado primer single Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse es un hit instantáneo que no me hace suponer que desde The Sunlandic Twins a este disco hayan pasado ya 2 años.
Sus característicos loops, las palmadas y los falsettos inconfundibles de Kevin Barnes no me hacen afirmar que sea un disco superior a los anteriores, pero tampoco retroceden, es más tratan de “jugar” con una canción de 12 minutos que para ser sinceros cansa. A pesar que no cuenten con tantas singles “hits” o porque quizás tiendan a sonar muy lineales. (sin que esto fuese algo malo en este caso), Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?, sigue siendo un buen complemento del Sunlandic Twins.

Band Of Horses – Everything All The Time (2006)

Nota: Post retenido desde el año pasado porque carece de objetividad alguna en vista que su servidor le da piel de gallina al terminar de escuchar la canción The Funeral.
Este dúo de Seattle debutó en grande con su álbum Everything All The Time. El tiempo y la disposición no me permitió reseñarlo en su oportunidad, pero este es un gran discazo, su excelente producción te lleva a paisajes nostálgicos y en ciertos momentos felices, fortalecidos por el folk y rock anglosajón recordando a bandas de corte “americana/country/folk/rock”, que casi todos reseñan: My Morning Jacket y Neil Young.
Luego de escuchar su primer single The Funeral, detonante para que empezaran a ser comentados, (que es de lo mejor que sonó en el 2006, por no decir que fue la mejor canción del 2006… EVAA*), no debería dejarte para nada indiferente esta banda … “and every occasion I’ll be waiting for the funeral”, simplemente grande.
Este track se divide en:
- Comienzo Pangolo en el que te dices… baaah, canción lenta.
- Cambios de pangolo a canción corta venas y viceversa… empieza a sonar el coro, empieza el “in crescendo”…… hmmmm, me agrada.
- Últimos 50 segundos, final contundente majestuoso, piel de gallina.
En realidad, si bien peco en exaltar obscenamente este primer single (como la mayoría que ha escuchado el disco), todas las canciones del álbum se podrían catalogar como grandes hits (cada una en su propio estilo).
Everything All The Time es un disco hecho con sentimiento, de esos que tienden a pasar por debajo de la mesa fácilmente pero que transmite muchas emociones en sus composiciones, discos como estos son los que te hacen pensar como hubiese cambiado el panorama musical de haberse dado conocer en una mayor audiencia…. (baaah, tampoco para tanto (ese puesto lo mantiene Neutral Milk Hotel – In The Aeroplane Over The Sea) pero como dije, este post carece de objetividad)

Warning: This post was shelved last year because of the lack of objectivity in its content. The main reason is: the author has goose pimples every moment he listens the song The Funeral.
Everything all the Time is the big debut of this duo from Seattle. Time and disposition couldn’t let me publish this review on time, but this is a greeeat record, its excellent production leaves you in a nostalgic and happy landscape characterized by the Americana/Folk/country/rock style of bands such as My Morning Jacket and Neil Young.
After listening the first single “The Funeral” this album shouldn’t let you indifferent (The Funeral is the main reason everybody loves the record, and I could say is the best song of 2006)…. “and every occasion I’ll be waiting for the funeral”… simply amazing.
This track has 3 parts:
Slowly: when you think… naaahh this is a lame song.
Change: slow to great …. Starts the “in crescendo”.. I like it.
Last 50 seconds…. Astonishing final = goose pimples
Everything All The Time is a record made with feelings. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if this album became mainstream and how music industry would change because of it. (like Neutral Milk Hotel – In The Aeroplane Over The Sea)

Frases memorables de la película Garden State (2004):
“Sam: Tienes que escuchar esta canción, juro que cambiará tu vida”
Escuchas “New Slang”….. y luego BOOM, las ventas del álbum de The Shins aumentan y cambian totalmente el status de pequeña banda indie de culto, todo gracias a Natalie Portman y Zach Braff.
Ahora, 3 años desde su anterior álbum, la banda regresa con su tercera producción. Se que dije cuando se filtró el disco que era maaalo, pero no lo es (yo sólo estaba molesto por el cierre del blog). Sin embargo, Wincing The Night Away no es la gran sensación que todos creíamos que sería, pero al menos se pone mejor con cada escucha.
Canciones como Australia, Girl Sailor y el primer single Phantom Limb confirman el por qué una banda como The Shins sigue gustando… En este disco suenan maduros pero si has seguido a la banda ya tu sabes con lo que te vas a encontrar y eso es lo que la mantiene viva y especial.
Que si el disco cambiará tu vida? Definitivamente… NO. Pero es un buen álbum. Mantiene el sonido característico de la banda, las canciones pop infecciosas y los frescos momentos que te dejan hasta que termina un determinado single.

Memorable Quotes from Garden State (2004):
“Sam: You gotta hear this one song, it’ll change your life I swear”
You hear “New Slang”….. and then BOOM, the sales of The Shins album went up and they changed their status of little cult indie band, thanks to Natalie Portman and Zach Braff.
Now, three years since the last record, the band comes with its third production. I know I said when the album leaked that it was a bad one… but no, it is not, I was mad for the close of my blog (but I learnt the lesson)…
It’s not the great sensation everybody was assuming it would be but it gets better with every listen.
Songs like Australia, Girl Sailor and the first single Phantom Limb just confirm why you still like The Shins… they sound like they have grown up but you know what you’re going to listen when you catch one of their albums and that’s the great thing.
Will it change your life now? Definitely NO. But it’s a good album. It maintains the trademarked sound of the band, the infectious songs and the fresh moments for a shiny day until the track ends.
