Llegamos a Diciembre y no podía evitar comentar sobre The Decemberists, esta banda de rock indie de Oregon, lanzó su cuarto disco “The Crane Wife” sucesor de aquella joya de fábula del 2005 “Picaresque”.

Para los que no tengan idea de lo que canta The Decemberists, estos son una banda indie con grandes rasgos de folk que cuentan con composiciones llenas de letras teatrales, basadas en historias épicas de bandidos, marineros y fábulas de los siete mares que los hacen ser una de las bandas más curiosas del circuito.

Con The Crane Wife se nota la fortaleza creativa de la banda y el cambio que les ha venido el haber firmado con Capitol. Esta vez, siendo más ambiciosos apuestan por experimentar en sus melodías con canciones conceptuales como The Crane Wife dividida en 3 partes y The Island de 12 minutos.

Sin embargo, no se separan de su peculiaridad acústica y brindan frescas canciones pop indie, “O Valencia” su primer single sobre el escape de unos novios muy a lo Romeo Julieta, es perfecto para darse conocer a una mayor audiencia, de hecho recientemente hicieron el video con el fondo de pantalla verde para que los fans lo completaran…. sin embargo las canciones de este álbum no llegan a superar hits anteriores como We Both Go Down Together o el gran cuento de marineros que representó The Mariner’s Revenge Song del álbum Picaresque.

Algunos días prefiero Picaresque otros días The Crane Wife, pero en fin el álbum ha fortalecido el nombre de la banda dejándolos en un nivel superior, posiblemente fans de The Decemberists desde sus comienzos dirán que se han vendido y perdieron esa estela de “exclusividad” característico de bandas indie… independientemente de lo que se diga el disco cumple su objetivo, por algo quedaron en 3er lugar como lo mejor del 2006 en la lista de Amazon.

It’s December and I couldn’t forget the review of The Decemberists, this indie band form Oregon released its fourth album called “The Crane Wife” follow-up of this great musical Cd from 2005 “Picaresque”.

If you don’t know The Decemberists, they are an indie band with folk influences; they are one of the most curious bands of the circuit because their songs are about epic stories of mariners, bandits and tales of the seven seas.

With The Crane Wife you can notice their creative strength and the change in their music after signing with Capitol. This time, they are more ambitious and start to experiment with their melodies with a conceptual song “The Crane Wife” divided in three parts and the 12 minutes song The Island.

The Decemberists – We Both Go Down Together (from Picaresque album)

Don’t worry, they are still that fresh band with their great songs, “O Valencia” is the first single, about the escape of two lovers “ala” Romeo And Juliet.
This is the perfect track to be recognized in a large audience, in fact they made a video in a green screen and asked their fans to finish it.
The only thing I could say is that the songs of The Crane Wife won’t be better as We Both Go Down Together or the greatest mariners tale “The Mariner’s Revenge Song” from Picaresque album.

There are days I prefer Picaresque and other days I like The Crane Wife, but at the end this album has made bigger the name of this band. Probably early Decemberists’ fans will say they sold to the industry…. Whatever, this is a nice album, for that reason it’s in the Top 3 of Best Albums of 2006 in Amazon.
