In June I wrote a review about last musical blog sensation “Beirut” and I became an obsessive fan of his album. Let’s remember Gulag Orkestar was recorded with the help of Jeremy Barnes (drummer of indie cult band Neutral Milk Hotel) and Heather Trost, creating a journey to balcanic music, and also, one of the best debuts of this year.
If you liked Beirut, you should listen his godfathers, following the same style, adopting the sounds of Eastern Europe. This duet: A Hawk and A Hacksaw (with one of the best band names in my opinion) are here with their third album “The Way The Wind Blows” and the result is excellent. Here’s a track-by-track review:
In the River: The first notes of this song tell us the way this album takes, its slow rhythm has a Bolero Ravel resemblance but in a balcanic style. This track maintains its melody without reaching a climax. 4.5/5
The Way The Wind Blows: My favorite song of the album, the violin is the main player of this balcanic tango. 5/5
One of the aspects this album is characterized is that the majority of the songs seem to be conceived in a gypsy caravan and in a funeral procession. The following tracks have this thing in common:
Song for Joseph: Funeral 4/5
Fernando’s Giampari: caravan 4/5
God Bless The Ottoman Empire: Caravan, trying to reach a climax… until you go to Waltz For Strings And Tuba. 4.5/5
Waltz For Strings And Tuba: Waltz… Nino Rota’s best style. 5/5
Oporto: Ok, If you want to be sad this is your song (1:20 min), it’s an appetizer to prepare you to the next track 4/5
GaDje Sirba: Nice, full of trumpets, I could say it’s a Sabre Dance part 2 hehe, saving the differences. 5/5.
The Sparrow: Following the same rhythm of the last track but with the violin as the main player. (Shakira must dance these songs) 4/5
Salt Water: I really don’t like this song, it’s a way to say goodbye, closing circles and warning us that the album is ending. Slow and dark. 3.5/5
There Is A River In Galisteo: Actually it’s not a song, in its minute this one repeats the first words of the album’s opening.
This album is a great experience, it blows your mind with its Eastern Europe melodies.. and if you has a lamp, probably a genie comes up.

Meses atrás hice un post sobre la última sensación musical bloguera Beirut y me convertí en admirador obsesivo del álbum. Recordemos que Gulag Orkestar fue grabado con la ayuda de Jeremy Barnes (baterista de la banda indie de culto Neutral Milk Hotel) y Heather Trost, creando uno de los mejores discos del año con ese viaje a la música balcánica.
Si te gustó Beirut, pues debes escuchar a sus padrinos, siguiendo el mismo estilo al adoptar los sonidos de la Europa Oriental. Este duo, A Hawk and A Hacksaw (además de contar con un gran nombre) vienen con su tercer grabación discográfica The Way The Wind Blows y el resultado no es nada mal. He aquí track por track:
In the River: Las primeras notas de este track nos adentra a lo que nos encontraremos a lo largo del álbum, se caracteriza por un ritmo pausado, muy “a la” Bolero Ravel pero en un ambiente balcánico, sin llegar a un climax, sino más bien manteniendo su melodía constante. 4.5/5
The Way The Wind Blows: Mi canción favorita del álbum, el violín es el protagonista principal de este tango de los balcanes. 5/5
Una de los aspectos que caracteriza el álbum es que la mayoría de las canciones pareciera que fuesen sacadas de una caravana gitana y de una procesión funeral. Los que cumplen estos aspectos son los siguientes tracks:

God Bless The Ottoman Empire: Caravana, con un tono que va aumentando progresivamente hasta que… llegas a Waltz For Strings And Tuba. 4.5/5
Waltz For Strings And Tuba: Vals al mejor estilo de Nino Rota. 5/5
Oporto: Ok, pásame el cuchillo por esta pieza de un minuto 20 seg para deprimirse, buen abreboca para la festividad que se avecina en el siguiente track. 4/5
GaDje Sirba: Llena de trompetas (o no se si será otro instrumento, ya todo me suena igual)… podría decir que es un Sabre Dance parte 2 jeje, salvando las diferencias. 5/5.
The Sparrow: Siguiendo el mismo ritmo e intensidad del anterior corte pero con el violín como protagonista, Shakira ya quisiera verte bailar estas canciones. 4/5
Salt Water: El track que menos me llama la atención, es una manera de ir ya cerrando ciclos y avisando que ya el disco llega a su final, pausado y oscuro predomina la batería. 3.5/5
There Is A River In Galisteo: No la considero canción en si, en su minuto de duración repite la frase con la que comenzó el disco.
Este álbum es una grata experiencia, al dejarte llevar por sus melodías, dejándote esa sensación de valses en los balcanes. (err… si, me puse intenso), y si te descuidas y tienes una lámpara te sale un genio.
